TMA's September Teacher of the Month is Piano Instructor & Staff Accompanist Natalie Barela!

Q: If you could only play one composer for the rest of your life, who would it be?

A: Easy - Rachmaninoff! You might not guess this of me as our hand sizes are quite opposite, but I'm in love with his coloring and depth in his notes. Fun fact: Did you know that Tchaikovsky attended Rachmaninoff's concerts and was fond of his work? Rachmaninoff had been a fan of Tchaikovsky since he was twelve years old!

Q: What is one thing that you think you teach uniquely?

A: I let each of my students know that in addition to learning how to read what on the page, they're also learning how to teach themselves. We only have about thirty minutes together each week, so I want them to additionally consider how to think like a teacher when I'm not around. Practicing "teaching" parents, siblings, and other family members is a great way to jumpstart this and share the joy

Q: What is your favorite part about being a piano instructor?

A: Connection! Much of our practicing is done by ourselves, which is awesome as you get to feel totally immersed in the music. With teaching, my students and I get to share that moment together while also strengthening reading skills.

🎻 BIG NEWS: For the first time in TMA's history, we have two violin instructors!

Please welcome Nicolas Williams to our teaching team!

Nicolas was referred to us directly by Lead Violin Instructor Deanna Miller. While he already has a couple of students assigned to him directly, he will also be subbing in for Deanna when she is absent and helping her to coordinate the overall program.

A highly qualified violinist in his own right, Nicolas is a substitute violinist for the Salisbury Symphony and serves as an Ensemble Librarian at the UNCSA School of Music.

Nicolas is currently in his second year of his Master of Music in Violin Performance at the UNC School of the Arts. He previously graduated from UNCSA with his Bachelor of Music and High School Diploma, both also in Violin Performance.

TMA's September Student of the Month is Nina M., who studies with Lead Violin Instructor Deanna Miller! 🎻

Q: What do you like most about violin lessons?
A: My teacher, my teacher is really nice.

Q: What other activities do you do besides violin?
A: I play soccer.

Q: What has been your favorite experience with Triad Music Academy?
A: I liked playing in the recital.

Q: Which musicians do you look up to or like to listen to?
A: I like to listen to Lainey Wilson.

Q: Why did you decide to take violin lessons?
A: I was playing piano first, but violin was really fun.

Introducing TMA's two newest Piano Instructors, David Bush and Mike Jenkins! 🎹

Both of these gentlemen fit a very similar profile: longtime church musicians and piano educators who are retired from full-time careers in the corporate world.

David (left) recently moved to the area from Texas, where he served as an organist, choir director, pianist, and handbell choir director at several churches throughout the Dallas area. He was the also the Artistic Director of the Lakeside Civic Chorus in Rockwall, TX. David has a Master of Music in Piano Performance & Pedagogy and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, both from East Texas A&M University.

Mike (right) has been local to the Piedmont Triad for decades. He has served as an organist, assistant music director, and pianist at churches in High Point, Jamestown, and Winston-Salem. He is also an accomplished jazz pianist and performed as a member of the U.S. Airways Jazz Orchestra and currently plays with the Special Occasion Band. Mike holds a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from the UNC School of the Arts.

TMA's August Teacher of the Month is Piano Instructor Sarah Kennedy!

Q: If you could only play one composer for the rest of your life, who would it be?

A: I'd have to say Bach, which might give me away as an organist! Bach's music is known for being cerebral and technically demanding, and those things are certainly true, but his writing has spiritual and emotional depth which can sometimes be overlooked due to his intellectual rigor.

Q: What is one thing that you think you teach uniquely?

A: I talk with even my youngest students about how practicing works and the science behind how we learn. So many of us were either given no guidance on how to practice or taught a set of principles that are now being replaced by more recent research on how our brains actually commit learning to long-term memory.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a piano instructor?

A: I absolutely love experiencing the different ways my students think about music and seeing them bring more and more of their whole selves to lessons. It is so beautiful to hear the stories and personal connections they make while playing and listening to music!

Introducing our newest Voice Instructor, Olivya Moore!

A lifelong Greensboro resident, Olivya brings experience with students as a former Counselor at the Greensboro Opera's Youth Camp, as well as performance experience as a Soprano Soloist at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church.

Olivya graduated from UNC Greensboro with her MM in Vocal Performance and from Guilford College with a BA in Music. Additionally, she minored in Visual Arts with a concentration in Printmaking while at Guilford, joining several of our other instructors who have multidisciplinary artistic experiences.

Lastly, Olivya also comes to TMA with competition experience; Olivya won Third Place in the Carol Brice Music Association's Scholarship Competition for Voice in 2024.

TMA's August Student of the Month is Annabelle B., a voice student of Peyton Wheeler! 🎤

Q: What do you like most about voice lessons?
A: I’m learning how to express my creativity with singing while staying true to the song.

Q: What other activities do you do besides voice?
A: Besides voice classes I act with the Little Theater of Winston Salem and next year at Reynolds High School, I’m an active Girl Scout and I babysit.

Q: What has been your favorite experience with Triad Music Academy?
A: I’ve loved training with Peyton because she’s the best!

Q: Which musicians do you look up to or like to listen to?
A: Because of my love for Broadway, I like Jeremy Jordan and McKenzie Kurtz. I also love listening to Sabrina Carpenter’s new album. Also Olivia Rodrigo.

Q: Why did you decide to take voice lessons?
A: I started voice lessons so I could be confident with my voice on stage.

TMA's July Teacher of the Month is Piano Instructor & Head Piano Technician Austin Caldie!

Q: If you could only play one composer for the rest of your life, who would it be?

A: It would have to be Rachmaninoff. He's got it all: intricate counterpoint, beautiful melodies, flashy technical passages... a pianist's dream.

Q: What is one thing that you think you teach uniquely?

A: I try to be unique in how I approach improvisation, encouraging my students to use their imagination to think of gestures, shapes, colors, how animals would sound, fun stuff like that before laying down any strict rules. Think of how kids babble before learning grammar!

Q: What is your favorite part about being a piano instructor?

A: Being able to see the connection between emotional and musical development is incredible- not just for my younger students, but my adults too! Watching everyone get closer and closer to effortlessly expressing their inner selves is a reward in itself.
