Basic Life Support CPR/AED
Instructor: Tom Burroughs
The 5+hr BLS course provides professional level CPR/AED certification for those who work in the health care field or for those who otherwise require it for their jobs. This level of certification is required for the WFR and EMT-W upgrade certifications. This specific program provides the standard BLS training and provides additional in depth training concerning outdoor specific emergencies and wilderness protocols. Successful completion results in a two-year BLS certification from ASHI. The minimum age requirement for this course is 16 (or special permission).

Wilderness First Aid (WFA)
Instructor: Tom Burroughs
This two day course immerses participants in basic wilderness medicine procedures, preparing individuals to take immediate action when an outdoor activity doesn't go as planned and 911 responders are hours away. Time is split between interactive classroom sessions and hands-on field scenarios to prepare participants and help them quickly develop basic backcountry medical care skills. The course focus is on patient assessment, stabilization and emergency treatment of issues such as hypothermia and snakebites, as well as understanding of when and how to attempt evacuation. Participants will emerge capable of calmly responding to a wide variety of emergency situations. Minimum age requirement for this course is 14. Buffalo River Steel Creek Facility

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

This 80+hr course is designed to provide outdoor professionals such as rangers, guides, outdoor educators and search and rescue personnel with the skills to manage complex medical challenges in the backcountry. While this certification is required for many outdoor professions, it is also sought out by backpackers, cavers, paddlers and wilderness expedition members as well as anyone who spends time working/living in remote areas. Taught by medical professionals who possess decades of actual hands-on professional back country medical and rescue experience, the WFR course is an intensive 80 hour program that will challenge you both physically and mentally. The focus is on more than just trauma; it covers long-term management of sickness and serious health problems when quick evacuation and outside help is not an option. Time is split between hands-on medical training, lecture, discussion and both day and night field scenarios which all blend together into a learning experience that has no equal. Intensive hands on training and the development of solid "critical judgment" is the foundation for the program. The WFR certification is recognized nationwide and will give you skills for life. Successful completion results in the nationally recognized Wilderness First Responder certification from OSRE/ASHI. Certification period is for two years, with recertification required before the end of the third year. A healthcare provider level BLS CPR/AED certification is required prior to final certification. If needed, this certification is available on day six of the WFR course for a small additional fee.

Re-Certification for WFR & EMT-W

This 24+hr course allows participants who hold a WFR certification no more than 3 years old (original certifying course has to have been a Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) minimum standard 72+hr course) to update their skills and knowledge to current standards and participate in numerous scenarios that will reinforce their original training. Wilderness EMT Upgrade
Instructor: Tom Burroughs
The 80+hr WFR course can be taken by currently certified (state or National Registry) EMTs to upgrade their certification to EMT-W (Wilderness). They will go through the standard WFR course and will receive additional training as well. Successful completion will result in the Wilderness EMT certification.
