NSTI Vermont Learn all about transportation careers at our FREE one week residential camp at VSU’s Randolph campus and one week day camp at our Williston Campus.

National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) "The summer program that takes you places!" is a FREE residential program that takes place over 2 one week sessions on the campus of Vermont Technical College:

* 1 week residential program for high school students
* Held on the Vermont Technical College's Randolph campus from Sunday, July 10th - Friday, July 15th 2022
* An exploration of

our transportation system
* Learning in the classroom, the lab, and on field trips
* Easy to apply

* 1 week day program for middle school students
* Held on the Vermont Technical College's Williston campus from Monday July 25th - Friday, July 29th 2022

We are sad to announce that due to delays in federal funding, our popular NSTI camps will not occur this summer. We are optimistic about a successful return in 2027!

For Summer 2026, VTrans is actively exploring alternative options to the full camps. We will share more information here as it becomes available.

Environmental Science Day! Many people don't know that transportation work includes a variety of interesting science careers! VTrans science work includes river and stormwater specialists, archaeologists, wetlands biologists, wildlife scientists, meterology, and other environmental specialists. On this day campers participated in Water Quality testing at the Third Branch of the White River and worked on coding for field monitoring with members of a VTSU student research team. Campers also worked with Jens from VT Fish & Wildlife on animal habitat, and evaluated culverts and river characteristics at the university's Randolph campus stream table with a VTSU professor and VTrans engineers. Unfortunately, many of the camper's properties flooded! Then campers had some down time in the pool before testing their boats.

VTrans Day at Middle School Camp! On Tuesday over 60 VTrans engineers, technicians and operators, State Police, and DMV employees gave up their day to share what they do with NSTI campers! First campers went to a bridge construction site in Jericho, and heard from the VTrans Bridge designers and constructin managers. Then on to the VTrans District 5 facility in Colchester! Campers got to write their own messages on a big electronic highway sign, use line striping equipment, learn about drones, make a street sign with their name, help create a larger traffic board, and use used a culvert crawler. They also got to interact with two beautiful police K9 dogs, and use 'impairment googles' while trying to walk a straight line, drive a golf cart through an obstacle course while texting, operate a backhoe, and explore many pieces of heavy equipment.

Middle School Camp has started! On their first day campers decorated hardhats for use later in the week and developed a respectful code of conduct for the week. VTrans Engineers then taught campers about a car's "crumple zone" and campers worked in groups to design and build cars out of recycled materials. Each camper had a (hard-boiled) egg to protect in their car. We then tested the cars! Videos of that to come soon. In the afternoon campers worked in teams to design and build boats to test in the pool, later in the week!

Middle School camp has already started and we still have high school camp photos to post! Here are HS campers learning to fly drones, sieve soils, and size culverts at the university stream tables. Drones are used for many technical tasks, to support VTrans technicians. This can include obtaining photos of flooding and taking images of areas too unstable for VTrans employees to safeyly inspect. Stormwater and flooding are huge issues in Vermont and campers spoke with VTrans hydraulic engineers about how to protect Vermont's infastructure from future events.

So many more activities! Running heavy equipment, using a traffic simulator and... VTrans Day! Over 60 VTrans technicians, operators and engineers hosted the campers at the White River Junction Maintanence Facility. DMV Law Enforcement also attended with their K9 unit. Department of Liquor Control came with their impairment goggles so campers could experience how their vision and reaction times are affected by drugs and alcohol.
