Zion's beginning and her Pastor's: The first worship services were conducted by Rev. Places of worship through the following years included other member homes, the Episcopal Church, the Methodist Church, the Eddy Mortuary, and the Baptist Church. Following the sudden death of Pastor Von Renner in 1962, Rev. Arlo Krueger of Sparks and then Rev. Emil Leising of Gardnerville served as vacancy pastors. In October 1965 Rev. Tobias Beuhner was installed as the first resident pastor. He was followed by Rev. Ray Kringle in 1968, Rev. Kenneth Wyndken in 1971, Rev. Steven Liechti in 1974, and Rev. Tony Kluender in 1980. During the vacancy beginning in 1985, several circuit and district pastors conducted services as well as a few laymen. Brent Bianchi also served Zion for 6 months in 1986-87. On July 26, 1987, Rev. Mark Kliewer, a new graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, was installed as pastor, along with the call to serve Christ's Mission, now Christ Lutheran Church, in Battle Mountain and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ely, Nevada. Kliewer remains as Pastor of Zion and Christ Lutheran Churches.. Though a few of the pastors who served Zion in the 70's and 80's were not affiliated with The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod , from the very beginning Zion was a part of the of the L.C.M.S. and remains a member LCMS congregation today. Early Childhood Education: In 1973 Marge Wyneken, wife of the pastor, and Jan Kniep, on of the members of Zion, began a small Preschool at Zion. In 1981 another member of Zion, Linda Wilson, began directing and teaching the Preschool. In 1988 the Preschool was licensed by the State of Nevada. Zion began a Childcare in 1994 when the new facility was built on Highland Drive and continued the Childcare in that facility until the adjacent house was ready for use as a Childcare in 1998. The Childcare continues at that location with maximum occupancy of 28 students and the Preschool continues in the Church Education wing with 3 classrooms and a maximum enrollment of 110 students. The Faithful: Many dedicated and faithful people, too numerous to mention, have contributed to the work and building at Zion over the years. All of them, gifts of God to those who benefit from his ministry at Zion, wanted only for more people to hear and lean more about Jesus Christ and Him crucified for our sins. To Him, only, be the honor and the glory!
