Happy Independence Day!

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, we reflect on the enduring ideals of liberty, self-government, and the responsibility each generation bears in preserving them.

In 1976, during the nation's Bicentennial celebration, Senator Jesse Helms observed:

"A people must first possess, it seems to me, an active will to be the author of their own history—to have a sense of purpose worthy of their country, and a sense of destiny that is fully adequate to the challenge of the new era."

On this July 4th, we also remember Senator Jesse Helms, who passed away on Independence Day in 2008. As we commemorate our nation's founding and those who devoted their lives to public service, Independence Day offers an opportunity to appreciate our shared history and recommit ourselves to the principles that have guided our country for 250 years.

We're saddened by the passing of Coach Lou Holtz, 89, a legendary leader whose influence reached beyond the football field and broadcast booth. He and Senator Jesse Helms shared a special friendship that lasted decades and was based on their love of country, faith, and deeply-held convictions. We extend our thoughts and prayers to the Holtz family and all who were personally touched by his leadership, inspiration, and example.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt. Though Senator Helms and Governor Hunt were from opposite sides of the aisle, the two leaders respected each other. Both men loved North Carolina. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hunt Family at this time of grieving.

On this day in 1942, Jesse Helms and Dorothy Coble said, "I do" in Raleigh. They were married for 65 years, until Senator Helms' death in 2008.

Today, on what would have been her 100th birthday, we proudly remember Lady Margaret Thatcher — a towering figure in global history and a cherished friend of Senator Jesse Helms.

Their friendship was one of shared conservative principles: a belief in individual liberty, strong national sovereignty, and unwavering leadership in the face of adversity. It was a bond forged not only through politics but through a deep mutual respect.

We were especially honored to welcome Lady Thatcher to Wingate, North Carolina, in April 2001, where she cut the ribbon at the dedication of our new Jesse Helms Center building — a moment that remains one of the most meaningful in our Center’s history.

On this day, we pause to remember the lives lost and the heroes who emerged from the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Senator Jesse Helms spoke on the Senate floor the day after the attacks, reminding us of the resolve and courage that define our country. May we never forget that day and the strength we found as a nation. God bless America.

Today, we mourn the passing of Dr. James Dobson. He and Senator Helms worked together on so many issues important to Christians and families. Senator Helms was a champion for Focus on the Family, and Dr. Dobson even referred to Senator Helms as "a true American hero." We do not doubt that both Dr. Dobson and Senator Helms are reunited in Heaven, as both were God's true servants on earth. Our prayers are lifted for the entire Dobson family and for Focus on the Family.
