Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the first responders, members of our Armed Forces, and ordinary Americans who showed extraordinary courage in the face of evil.
In the aftermath of the attacks, Senator Jesse Helms spoke clearly about what was at stake:
“The terrorists who struck the Pentagon and the World Trade Center towers were attacking us because of what America stands for: freedom, religious toleration, and individual liberty. They despise what we represent. And they want to terrorize us into retreat and inaction so that we will be afraid to defend freedom abroad and live as free people here at home. They will not succeed!”

Twenty-five years later, we still remember. We still honor. And we still pray.
We pray for the families who continue to mourn loved ones taken that day. We pray for the survivors and first responders who still carry its burdens. We pray for the men and women who have defended our nation in the years since, and for the families who have shared in their sacrifice.
May we never forget the cost of freedom, never take its blessings for granted, and never cease asking for God’s mercy, protection, and guidance for the United States of America.
