We are honored to again collaborate with Winfield Fire/EMS Department to host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the 77 Steps.

Our community is invited to join us on campus; that may mean climbing the flights right alongside our brave first responders or simply coming out in the morning to show support.

We're grateful that our students get to witness and participate in a moving display of remembrance and community each year. Never forget.

On September 11, Winfield Fire/EMS and the Winfield Firefighters Association will once again gather at the 77 Steps at Southwestern College for our 9th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

This year marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001. We invite our community to join us as we remember those we lost and honor all who answered the call that day.

The climb is a come-and-go event from 5:00–9:00 a.m. Participants may arrive anytime during the morning and climb at their own pace. No registration is required, and everyone is welcome to participate.

Today at 2pm: Ted S. Hresko, a distinguished Southwestern College alumnus, trustee, and Leadership Hall of Fame inductee will speak at the Winfield Public Library.

Hresko, who possesses decades of high-level protective and investigative experience, served in the United States Secret Service Presidential Protective Division during the historic events of September 11, 2001.

The one-hour interactive forum aims to bridge the real-life history and deep empathy of Come From Away with the contemporary needs of the local community, intentionally "connecting the dots" between global resilience and local hospitality.

The dialogue will feature a dynamic, three-part structure co-led by Hresko and Seth Bate, a local cast member and professional facilitator with the Kansas Leadership Center: The event will begin with a brief, personal reflection by Hresko on his firsthand experiences serving the country during the events of 9/11 and continue with an open forum allowing library patrons and community members to engage directly with Hresko. Bate will lead a guided discussion on how the musical's core themes of radical hospitality and community resilience can be applied to Winfield today.

This community event serves as a powerful primer for Theatre Winfield's upcoming production of Come From Away, directed by Terry McGonigle. The musical chronicles the true story of September 11, 2001, when U.S. airspace was closed and 38 commercial airliners were unexpectedly diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. Overnight, a tiny community of fewer than 8,000 residents opened its doors to nearly 7,000 stranded passengers, sparking extraordinary acts of generosity and lifelong friendships.

Performances of the local production will be held Friday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, August 2 at 2:00 p.m. in Richardson Performing Arts Center located at Southwestern College. Admission is FREE thanks to the generous underwriting of production costs by an anonymous donor. Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door to support local first responders.

Community Conversation: Come From Away

Join us at the Winfield Public Library on Sunday, July 12 at 2 p.m. for a special community dialogue exploring the themes of resilience, kindness, and hospitality featured in Come From Away. Hear firsthand reflections from Ted S. Hresko, who served in the U.S. Secret Service during 9/11, and take part in a discussion about what these lessons mean for our community today.

The event is a great introduction to Theatre Winfield’s upcoming production of Come From Away, which tells the true story of a small town that welcomed thousands of stranded travelers after 9/11. For more information, contact the library at 620-221-4470.

Southwestern College is pleased to announce the appointment of Sara Denly as the Director of the Grace and David Nichols Family Nursing Program, effective July 1.

Denly, an alumna of Southwestern, brings a wealth of clinical experience to this role as an advanced practice nurse practitioner. She has served in pediatrics, emergency medicine, critical care, management, urgent care, clinic, and specialized pulmonary/sleep medicine.

“I am honored to return home to Southwestern College and to have the opportunity to serve our nursing students,” said Denly. “I’ve learned that in nursing, clinical skills are important, but our healthcare system needs nurses with character, resilience, critical thinking, and advocacy. I am deeply committed to ensuring this program prepares our nursing students for the realities of modern healthcare while empowering them to become leaders."
