“Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.” James Madison, The Federalist 51.
On this Law Day, I’m celebrating the privilege of practicing law for the past forty years. It has been the great joy of a lifetime, and I hope we never forget that the rule of law is indispensable to our system of government. May we all continue to strive to maintain an independent, fair, and impartial judiciary.
Happy Law Day!

As we pause for time with family and friends, may we reflect upon a world all too often void of hopeful expectation and unconditional love to observe a season of wonder, grace and light.
Merry Christmas and God bless.

Congratulations to Kentucky's new Public Advocate, Damon Preston. He has over twenty years of experience as a public defender and I was fortunate to spend some of that time with him when he practiced in Richmond. It's encouraging to see a commitment to experienced leadership for an agency that advocates for our citizens and defends the Constitution on a daily basis.

The 14th Amendment is the means by which our Bill of Rights became applicable to all citizens regardless of their stature or residence, It is the law of the land in all of our courts. Lawyers have advocated and courts have determined based upon the 14th Amendment that black children and white children should be afforded the same public education in the same public schools; that in Kentucky, the children of Appalachia should expect the same quality of public education as the children of the Bluegrass; that silence does not infer guilt; that the privacy of our homes be protected and respected by our governments.
It is our constitutional protection against despotism and authoritarianism.
It is our safeguard from arbitrary conduct imposed upon us by the government. With its enactment, we as citizens became entitled to fundamental fairness and equal protection under law.
Happy Law Day to my friends and colleagues. Never forget, justice is the guardian of liberty,

Happy Independence Day
On this Independence Day, as we celebrate the foresight of early American patriots, let us remember the responsibilities that such independence requires of us today. May we be less willing to act in thoughtless anger and selfish motivation. Instead, may we take on the duty of free citizens-to be vigilant in our efforts to educate and inform ourselves, to discuss the business of our nation in a considerate and reasoned manner, and to support all those who sacrifice for the good of our common interests.
Happy 4th of July!

May we pause today and everyday in solemn gratitude to remember the men and women who have given their lives in service to our country. May we commit ourselves to personal sacrifice for the good of "a more perfect union" so that we may truly honor their courage and devotion to duty.

FUNDAMENTAL FAIRNESS, a legal mandate worthy of celebration on Law Day and everyday.
Almost 50 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court mandated a standard of "fundamental fairness"
that unequivocally affirmed the due process rights to which each of us are entitled.
Law Day 2016 celebrates the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Miranda v. Arizona. The Supreme Court imposed a duty upon law enforcement to advise a person in custody of their rights as guaranteed by our Constitution. It addressed the rights of individuals under the 5th Amendment (right to remain silent) and under the 6th Amendment (right to counsel); and it required government agents to adopt "procedural safeguards" sufficient so that persons can understand their basic rights under law.

The list of things for which I am grateful is long and always growing. Near the top of that list for the last 30 (or so) years is my work. I'm thankful for a fulfilling career and that I've been able to share it with hard working, kind colleagues and friends.
Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you're able to spend your day sharing your blessings with those close to you.
