Shenandoah University is dedicated to rebuilding College Catherine Flon, a K-12 school in Carrefour

Shenandoah University President Tracy Fitzsimmons, who has lived, studied and taught in Haiti, organized the first assessment trip to Port-au-Prince in early March 2010. Knowing that education is the key to any society's success, it was decided that Shenandoah will help one school, which serves thousands of children, rebuild. Working with its primary partner, Rotary International, and many other l

Street Scenes June 2011 06/11/2011

It is difficult to describe the sights, sounds and smells in the area that was the epicenter of the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake. As you look through these photos, imagine oppressive heat and humidity and an ever-present smell of burning trash along with the sounds of car horns, people and city life. Do not be fooled by the "clean" streets; the main roads have been cleared of most of the debris left after the quake, but they are rough, cracked and barely passable in places. Shenandoah works to help College Catherine Flon rebuild 06/11/2011

Hard to imagine a more productive two days at College Catherine Flon for our team. We toured the school's makeshift facilities, learned about access issues with water and electricity and worked to understand the constraints of the land. Jody Fox, Dave Ganse and Gene Fisher had a lively session with the school's director and senior leadership. They brainstormed the school's facility needs and envisioned educational spaces. Evenings and mornings have been spent verifying program needs and doing schematic drawings. A new school for College Catherine Flon seems one big step closer! (Photos by Cathy Kuehner)

Leah Marsallo: Up early today to take a trip to a hospital to meet with a Physical Therapist. Very excited to see the set up and see how therapy is done here in Haiti. Sad that our journey is coming to an end but ready to be back with friends and family! So thankful for the wonderful people I have met!

Meloonda Bregard, June 2011 06/07/2011

The Shenandoah group traveled on June 5 to Merger, Haiti, to visit 6-year-old Meloonda Bregard where she lives with her mother, father, older brother and sister. Their pre-earthquake home no longer exists, save for a concrete slab. The family now lives in a makeshift one-room dwelling. On June 6, the Bregards took Meloonda to College Catherine Flon for more physical therapy assessments. (Photos by Cathy Kuehner)

June 7, 2011: After a night full of thunderstorms and torrential rain, physical therapy professor Missy Wolff-Burke, PT student Leah Marsallo and pre-OT student Shannon Mays are off to Carrefour to spend more time w/Meloonda. Their drive will be made even more difficult by the flooding. It is impossible to imagine where Haitians find their strength.
