π Topic: Australian Dendrobiums: Beauties From Down Under
π€ Speaker: Kristen Uthus (New World Orchids)
π Date: July 14, 2026 at 7:00 PM EST
π Location: Sons of Italy - 117 Swanton Street, Wi******er, MA
ABOUT:
Dr. Kristen Uthus studied both plant and animal ecology and evolution at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the Ohio State University (OSU). She then taught biology and ecology at several colleges including VCU, OSU, University of Michigan, and Eastern Michigan University.
The daughter of a plant fanatic, Kristen has been growing orchids for over 20 years, and in 2014 she fulfilled her dream of making orchids a full-time commitment by purchasing NWO.
Although she enjoys growing many varieties of orchids and other plants, miniatures remain her passionβthe weirder the better. New World Orchids specializes in Japanese species including Neofinetia falcata, Dendrobium moniliforme, and Sederia japonica, but her miniature selection includes many other small species including Pleurothallids, Bulbophyllums, and Angraecums.
Although never entirely up to date, you can check out some of NWOβs offerings at www.newworldorchids.com.
Kristen lives in Manchester, MI, about an hour west of Detroit. She is supported in her orchid pursuits by her husband, Dr. Kevin Wehrly, and her two sons, Henry and Gus.
Kristen says..."Dendrobium is my favorite genus, and the Australian dens are my favorites of the bunch. They are big and small, warm to cool, diverse in form and flower, and no matter where you live in the US, you can grow these wonderful plants. Youβre going to fall in love".
PRE-ORDERS:
Kristen is offering a 10% discount on pre-orders delivered to the meeting. Order from the website newworldorchids.com and pay at meeting. Order cut-off date is July 4th.

π€ππ«π¨π°ππ«: Minnie D.
Minnie gave us a little history about her orchid:
βI got it 5 years ago at our MOS auction. It was such a big plant then, so two years ago Mike helped me divide it into 3 plants using his own bark culture mix. I give it a time release orchid fertilizer every 4 months (or when I remember) and water with tap water generally once a week, or when I notice that it is dry.
I took it outside for the whole summer last year, but the rest of the year it sat on the landing of my stairs facing an east window, where itβs exposed to the sun from morning to mid-day. Last year it did not bloom at all, and I honestly have no idea why it did so well this year!β

β¨ Next Tuesday, June 9th is our monthly meeting about growing orchids in your home!
Bring your blooming plants for our show table πΈ
Meetings are open to all - nonmembers too!
π Topic: Growing Orchids in the Home
π€ Speaker: Cordelia Head (J&L Orchids)
π Date: June 9, 2026 at 7:00 PM EST
π Location: Sons of Italy - 117 Swanton Street, Wi******er, MA
ABOUT:
J&L Orchids began as the culmination of the lifelong hobby of Janet & Lee Khun in 1969. The two of them, chemists, had spent their vacations traveling the world and by then they decided to use it to fund their expanding orchid collection and travels. By selling the seedling and hybrids from the plants they collected, they were able to travel to more remote areas and hire helpers to care for the greenhouses full of orchids.
By 2014, though, they began to wind down and put the business for sale. Over the next few years, they started to sell off some of their plants, until the start of 2017, where the Carreno family discovered the nursery and dedicated itself with Cordelia Head to restoring the collection and promote the collective effort in conserving species that would otherwise be lost and forgotten in our rapidly-changing world.Growing Orchids in the Home
Cordelia says that "this covers all the needs and problems of growing in the home (or greenhouse). I talk from all my years of experience with tips and tricks of the trade. Both experienced and new growers will find it informative and helpful."
