The best classroom has no walls. We do all we can to help people get outdoors.

If we can't do that we take the outdoors to them.

There’s a strange reason this matters in the woods.
Researchers have documented a counterclockwise bias in human movement, although exactly why it happens is still being studied.
The practical lesson is much clearer: without an outside reference, you can honestly believe you're walking straight while gradually drifting off course.
That’s why a compass, map, terrain association, and landmarks matter.
Have you ever caught yourself drifting off course when you thought you were walking straight?

Five things you never want to hear while passing a stranger on the trail.

I’m not saying you should immediately turn around…

But I’m also not saying you shouldn’t.

Which one would make you leave the trail?

Seven hiking shortcuts that are rarely worth the risk.
Racing the sunset, cutting switchbacks, leaving a marked trail, taking the steepest route, climbing unstable deadfall, crossing private property, and entering water you cannot properly assess can all create problems quickly.
A shortcut should save time without sacrificing safety, energy, or judgment.
Which of these have you seen hikers attempt?

You've likely seen sassafras leaves, but did you know they come in different shapes, even on the same tree? Many remember making tea from its roots, a childhood favorite. While some reports mention cancer risks, it's only a concern with extreme consumption. In moderation, sassafras tea can be perfectly fine. Have you ever made or tried it? Share your memories in the comments!

Tomorrow night’s Online Membership presentation is called “Being Harder to K*ll.”

This is one of the 20 slides I’ll use to break down the practical methods I personally rely on, along with the methods our instructor cadre uses in class, to help people become stronger, more capable versions of themselves.

We’ll dig into mindset, stress response, deliberate discomfort, decision-making, recognizing when your thinking is starting to slip, and how to regain enough control to take the next useful step.
This webinar is packed with information you can apply in the outdoors, during emergencies, and in everyday life.

Join the Online Membership today or tomorrow, and you’ll be able to tune in live. The webinar is included with the membership.

Membership details are in the comments.

I wasn’t expecting to find this in the woods.

Mayapple plants are common in this area, but finding their fully ripened fruit before the wildlife gets it is another matter. Box turtles, deer, turkeys, squirrels, and other animals often get there first.

This one was soft and ripe, so I cut it open to show you the inside and give it a taste. It has a tart flavor that some people use for drinks, preserves, or jelly.

Important: Only the fully ripe, yellow, soft fruit is considered edible, and only in limited quantities. The unripe fruit and the rest of the plant are poisonous.

Have you ever found a ripe mayapple fruit?

It does not have to be freezing outside for hypothermia to become a problem.

Getting wet, wind exposure, cotton clothing, stopping after heavy exertion, and running low on food or energy can all cause your body temperature to drop.

That means hypothermia can happen on a cool summer evening or even during a warmer day when you are soaked and exhausted.

Which of these five risks do you think people underestimate most?

How I Avoid Getting Lost on Unfamiliar Trails
Marked trails are helpful, but the unmarked offshoots are where navigation problems can begin.
Before hiking into an unfamiliar area, I mark the location of my vehicle in CalTopo and record my route as I travel. That gives me a reliable reference if the trail markings disappear, the map leaves something out, or I accidentally follow the wrong path.
A phone should never replace solid navigation skills, but using the right tools before you need them can help keep a small mistake from becoming a serious problem.
What do you use to keep track of your route in unfamiliar country?

See Out, Stay Hidden

A hunting blind needs to do more than hide you. It needs to help you stay still, see what is going on around you, and avoid unnecessary movement.

Craig tested this TideWe see-through hunting blind and liked how it gives you visibility from the inside while still helping you stay concealed from the outside.

Good setup for both turkey and deer hunting.

Use Craig’s exclusive TideWe discount code NR18 for a special offer.
