There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes to bring our House to Home project to life!

From our Lead Learners planning and connecting curriculum, to gathering and prepping materials, to problem-solving and adjusting along the way, this project takes a whole lot of teamwork from both our P-TECH team AND our scholars.

Add in the expertise, time, materials and support of our Industry Partners, and it truly becomes a team effort from start to finish.

We appreciate every person who puts in the work to keep this project (and all our projects) moving forward and create a hands-on, real-world learning experience for our scholars.

It takes a team to build a house… even a model one. We are excited to continue to watch these houses progress!

CREW during P-TECH gives scholars time to build skills like professionalism, teamwork and personal growth.

Earlier this school year during CREW, we worked through Sean Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens with input from our Industry Partners. Last week, we revisited Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind.

Scholars were challenged to think ahead to age 24, 25 or 26 and identify one BIG goal they have for themselves. Then, they worked backwards to identify shorter-term goals and steps they can begin taking now to move towards that long-term goal.

One of the best parts was the conversation that followed the individual goal setting time. As scholars shared their goals, their peers listened, encouraged, and offered ideas and support.

Goals may change along the way, but the lesson remains the same: think about where you want to go and start taking intentional steps to get there.

Today we welcomed Frankton High School’s Chapter 1 PCAP scholars to the WCHS P-TECH Innovation Center!

Our Wi******er Community High School, scholars took the lead, guiding our guests through scholar-led stations to share more about the different pieces of the P-TECH experience. We also had the opportunity to spend some work time together, answer questions and share ideas about what these programs look like in action.

One of the best parts of P-TECH and PCAP is the opportunity to collaborate, learn from one another and grow together.

It was a great day connecting with another P-TECH/PCAP school and continuing to build programs that create opportunities and help more scholars find success!

Our House to Home project took a closer look at something every home needs…water!

Scholars worked through a water study with one of our Lead Learners, Mrs. Shiffler, comparing regular tap water with different types of bottled water.

They explored how things like pH, total dissolved solids, hardness, minerals and treatment methods can impact both water quality AND the way water tastes.

Then came the best part, a blind water taste test!
Scholars sampled four unlabeled waters, rated them for things like clarity, odor, mouthfeel and taste, and then compared their preferences with the chemical data.

The big question: Does a more expensive bottle of water actually mean it tastes better or is “better” water?

This week, scholars will take their learning one step further by exploring different water treatment options and considering which ones they might choose to “add” to their own homes as part of the project.

Today, our P-TECH scholars welcomed Jeff Mills with Platinum Home Improvement into the P-TECH Innovation Center!

Mr. Mills shared great information about windows and window installation that our scholars will use as they continue construction on their own model homes as part of our House to Home Project.

From new home builds and remodels to different window styles, installation methods, and ways to enhance windows, Mr. Mills gave scholars professional insight for them to use as they move further into the building process.

Then it was time to put that knowledge into action! Scholars returned to their blueprints and began brainstorming window placement, sizing, and construction methods that would work best for their individual models. It was great to see scholars taking the information they had just learned and using it to problem-solve, make decisions, and determine the best approach for their own builds.

Another great example of how our Industry Partners help us connect classroom learning to real-world skills and careers.

Our scholars were hard at work today on their House to Home projects, and their model homes are really starting to take shape!

-- Purchase orders and checks submitted to the P-TECH Lumberyard for supplies
-- Footers leveled for their foundations
-- Crawl spaces leveled
-- Plumbing installed (prepped with info our scholars received from Industry Partner Jason Allen with Champion Drains LLC)
-- Subflooring placed
-- Framing underway

We also tapped into our creativity with a writing assignment that brings our English curriculum into the House to Home project.

From construction and financial literacy to creative writing, our scholars are seeing firsthand how multiple subjects and skills come together in a real-world project.
