Ever wonder who the lady is on the wall in our Dean Suite? 👀
Well… now’s your chance to find out!
✔Fact Check Friday features this question: who is Shenandoah’s School of Nursing named after? 💙🩺
✅Answer: Eleanor Wade Custer. She was a powerhouse advocate for nursing whose legacy still shapes SU today.
A Johns Hopkins–trained nurse, WWII recruiter for Army & Navy nurses, pediatric hospital leader, and lifelong champion for nursing education, Custer dedicated her career to service. Her impact at Shenandoah grew through decades of mentorship and generosity, including the creation of the Custer Nursing Endowment and Lecture Series.
In 2012, SU officially renamed the division the Eleanor Wade Custer School of Nursing in her honor. Her legacy continues to inspire every future nurse who walks through our doors. ✨

Faculty Spotlight | Medication AND Meaningful Conversation
We’re proud to recognize Dr. Paula Allocca, Director of Shenandoah University’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Graduate Program, for her participation in a recent episode of Peplau’s Ghost, a podcast dedicated to Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs).
In this episode, Dr. Allocca joins four PMHNP program directors and a biostatistician from across the United States for an important conversation about the role of psychotherapy in psychiatric-mental health practice.
💊 Medication matters—but so does meaningful conversation.
The discussion explores the need for PMHNPs to incorporate both medication management and therapeutic communication into patient care, recognizing the powerful role psychotherapy can play in helping individuals work through a wide range of emotional and mental health challenges.
We are proud to see Dr. Allocca representing the Shenandoah University School of Nursing and sharing her expertise and passion for preparing future PMHNPs to provide thoughtful, comprehensive, and patient-centered mental health care.
