Muscatine North and South Railroad Co

Muscatine North and South Railroad Co Historical information about the Muscatine North & South Railroad Company, which later became the Burlington, Muscatine and Northern Railroad.

September 30, 1897, the contract was let for the building of this short line of railroad and the work of construction was begun in August of the following year. January 10, 1899, the road was opened for business and trains commenced running across the new line, which at that time extended twenty-eight miles from Muscatine to Erick Junction, where connections could be made for Oskaloosa, Marshallto

wn, Mason City, Minneapolis and St. Paul, and now it will but but a short time before an extension of the road which has been building, will be completed to Burlington. This is a line of no small importance to Muscatine, as it taps a fine section of country between Burlington and Muscatine, over which a great deal of freight is hauled from Chicago, and the passenger traffic is increasing from day to day.

Why have I been fascinated with trains and railroads all my life? I grew up along the Mississippi River in a house on a bluff. The Rock Island railroad tracks made a bend a mere three block South of this house and past going North not but a 1/4 of a block to the East. The headlights from all Northbound trains started dim as they shown directly into my bedroom window, and as they approached the light became brighter and brighter until my bedroom was as bright as day. The horns in the night screaming as they passed. I spent many a night watching out that bedroom window as train after train made it’s way North. Wandering where they were headed, and what they were carrying.

That’s my story... what’s yours?
