October is here and the last quarter of the year holiday avalanche has begun - you can almost hear the freight train coming if you stop eating the halloween candy and make the chewing stop....oh, come on! I'm not the only one that has to buy a second bag of Halloween candy before Halloween because I ate almost all the good candy out of the first bag!

Besides that, we've got 6 months to go on our WHS Alumni Scholarship Fund Raising journey. Every year has been different...sometimes we shoot out of the gate and are way ahead of the goal numbers...and others are like this year...we're inching along...the goal of 15k is in sight...And we're starting to wonder here at the Alumni Headquarters high atop the Star Drug...maybe we need an executive meeting? Stay tuned to this space for what happens next!

In the meantime, our thanks this month go out to Marci Hart, '85 and Michelle (Vitek) Trede, '85 - Yeay Class of 1985! - They've kept our streak alive of not getting shut out on one of our monthly updates! Thank you girls! I mean, how does one do an update on zero dollars? You saved me!

So here comes the pitch....6 months to go...we've got a little over $ 11,000 dollars to go...if our calculator wasn't out of battery, we'd come up with several descriptions of what the Alumni out there needs to come up with per person...I think it's probably around 30 cents a day, but we'll know for sure next month when our batteries have arrived for our calculator.

In the meantime, if you'd like to assuage our anxiety and send in a donation to the WHS Alumni Scholarship fund, here's how you do it?

US Mail: WHS Alumni Association - Ted Marolf - PO Box 283 - Wilton, Iowa .52778

We're moving fast today - vacation issue alert! We'll be back next month at our normal time with lots of stories about our all expenses paid trip from our Wheel of Fortune win back in 2017.
In the meantime, our thanks this month go out to Marci Hart, '85 and Mick and Brenda (Ploen) Birkhofer for their support of our WHS Fund raising efforts.
It's the end of summer - school's back in session - the Beavers won their first football game - so you've all got a lot going on in the day to day flow of shenanigans and emergencies...but if a quiet time should ever come around...remember us and our efforts to pay it forward for the WHS Seniors of 2025. It's a gooe thing!
Here's the way you can join the part...which culminates in our annual Alumni Banquet in April:

The mighty worms of Central Iowa Fertilizer have outdone themselves this growing season! I'm pretty sure their work in my garden is done and they're migrating to my jealous neighbors' gardens to begin rehabbing their efforts for next year.

This specimen here is in excess of 4" in diameter and tipped the weight watcher's scale at 15.6 ounces...and is one of a couple dozen of this size that showed up in the garden this year.

Summer is starting to show threads of entropy as August speeds along. The WHS Alumni keeps on truckin' and this missive is an update of where the WHS Alumni Scholarship Fund is for the upcoming 2025 WHS senior class scholarship winners.
The news cycle is pretty slow...but that's going to end in about 10 days as Wilton Founder's Day comes to life. Maybe we'll see you all downtown enjoying a little Founder's Day food and/or beverage and we can shake you down in person for your spare change!

This month, we'd like to thank our cheerful donators - Marci Hart, '85 and Erin (Gavin) Parks, '07 for their generous donation to the scholarship fund. You helped us keep our streak alive of never having been shut out during an update period for the past 10 years! Quite a streak for the little alumni association that could!
It really is the hazy, lazy days of summer so to badger you into checking around the house for spare change is probably fruitless. Even my own garden has pretty much gone to weeds as the tomato plants try to strangle each other. But, say for a moment, you feel really useless looking at your iPad or Android or iPhone and just how many YouTube video shorts can I watch before I start to twitch, you could, in a fit of rage, throw off that online inertia and turn the couch cushions around and lift the chairs and couches to look underneath (studies have shown that there is probably 2 - 3 billion dollars of loose change in the furniture of houses in the United States. We thought so.

So, if after this late summer tirade you are ready to get us to shut up and leave you alone, here's where you can send your donation to the WHS Alumni Scholarship Fund:

US Mail: Ted Marolf - WHS Alumni Association - PO Box 283 - Wilton, IA. 52778

Or, use that machine that is listening to everything you say to use our PayPal link:

This update might have to last you until October as the staff (me) will be traveling in September so we'll be somewhat out of pocket for update purposes. In that case, you're not off the hook. We'll be monitoring the M1 and M2 money buckets so we'll know if there's been appropriate activity.

Until then, Go Beavers, and enjoy the rest of the summer!

These three come from the year 1909 - a mere 115 years ago - Harry and Edith Nicolaus in their Runabout a few miles east of West Liberty on what I would think is the HWY 6 route before it became the official HWY 6 -

The fourth of July came and went...where on earth is the summer going? The gardens are starting to come in and soon we'll all be swamped with tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis and all the rest...swapping produce back and forth. Vacations are in full swing...all the fun summer stuff is going on. And yet, we labor on here in the HQ of the WHS Alumni Association. Working toward that lofty goal of accumulating $ 15,000.00 in donations for next year's 2025 WHS graduating class scholarships.
So after you've had your fun this summer...after you figure out your iphone is at the bottom of the river...your wallet is in a ditch somewhere between here and Wapello...you need to turn your attention to your dear old alma mater...and the WHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund! We're manning the phones! We're never out of touch and are always in the mood to talk with our fellow alumni!
We have 9 months to go to knock out that last $ 12,000 and change. Cut that vacation short by 1 day and send it to us! Fly coach instead of 1st Class....and in the interest of safety, why not drive? I mean, there's a good reason why Boeing doesn't have entries in the Indy 500 or NASCAR races.
So this month, our thanks go out to Marci Hart, '85 and her continued support of our efforts and to Fred Grunder - proprietor of the Axe and Oak Restaurant in downtown Wilton - for their generous donation to the fund. We'll be hard at it this coming month...we'll check the mail box three times a day...for the love of God! Don't make us beg!
So after this pathetic, bleating plea, you're in the mood to send us your last drachmas or farthings, here's the snail mail address:
Ted Marolf.

Like a bad penny, we'll see you again in August!

We're going into full summer mode on the Muscatine County Freedom Rock engraved paver offering. This is the 4th offering - the first was in 2020, then 2021, then 2022. We took 2023 off to catch our breath but now we're back and would love to add at least 50 more engraved pavers with the name of your favorite veteran of the armed services. A great gift of gratitude and a permanent memorial to join the already over 700 names represented at the site in front of the historic Rock Island Line Depot in downtown Wilton.

The form is attached here or you can go to:
https://muscatinecountyfreedomrock.com/paver-order-form
and download the form and print it out, fill out and then return to the offices of the Wilton Development & Alliance in the city hall offices or mail it along with payment to the address shown on the form.

As before, we are offering three different sizes to choose from. The little squares are for individual characters - spaces and periods count as a character.

Feel free to give us a call at 563-554-4750 if you have questions about the Freedom Rock or this 4th offering of engraved pavers.
We hope to have enough pavers to do a fall installation - if not that, then spring of 2025.

Hope to see your favorite name there!

As the title of this month's update implies, summer is here in its full glory and pride. Corn's up and looking good...beans are in...my yellow squash are almost ready for the first one to be picked...summer time...and the livin's easy! So we have our 2nd update of the current 2025 WHS Scholarship Fund update - and we're glad to say, with everything that goes on in life and how easy it is to get distracted, we have maintained our 10 year streak of not being shut out on the monthly donation platform thanks to Joe McSwiggin, '61, Paul Lorber, Legacy '71, and Marci Hart, '85. Thank you, guys and gals (I am a trained biologist so I make this claim boldly and with confidence) for keeping our WHS Alumni Scholarship Fundraising streak intact!
We also want to thank Ben and Marie Brown, '86, for their generous donation to the WHS Endowment fund. That fund is growing incrementally and we have high hopes it will extend the alumni association's influence and activities far into the future!
So before you go out to mow the lawn or play with the dog, here's how you can join the party and help out your direct descendants at WHS:
Snail Mail (68 cents for a stamp!):
Ted Marolf.
WHS Alumni Association.
PO Box 283
Wilton, Iowa 52778
Or put that highly complex computer to work and send your tax deductible donation to our PayPal account:

Our donation collectors are standing by 24/7 to tabulate all the fund raising results which we'll bring to you next month!
In the meantime, Go Beavers!
