Parenting has to be one of the most challenging things. A few years ago I attended a talk where Lorena Seidel spoke about parent child connection, importance of family routines, setting expectations and having the right mindset. I was inspired by her method and it truly changed me the way I approach parenting and discipline to this day.

Working with teenagers made me realize how big of a role family dynamic plays in child's confidence, resilience, and academic success. I reached out to Lorena to see if she would speak for families I work with to offer insight into how to navigate challenges at home. I am thrilled to share this in person parenting event that will take place tonight at 7:30 pm in Wilton!

Please see more information attached and the link for registration below. I hope you can join me!

The textbooks, remember those? What happened to reading the textbooks?

Every year, less and less students are coming to sessions with their textbooks. This year, many students arrive with just their computers. Of course times have changed. But is the move towards online learning and in particular reading digital material really for the best of the learner? I have to wonder.

Compiled research from 33 studies tells us the following:
- 29 out of 33 laboratory studies revealed that students learn more from paper
- Learning from paper was significantly improved on nonfiction material but made almost no difference on fiction (so go ahead and keep reading the novels on kindle!)
- No difference in reading time between the two formats
- Screen readers over estimated their reading comprehension abilities while paper readers were much more accurate in self-judgment (such an important finding! Students are most likely putting in a lot less effort reading material on the screen and need to be taught to stop often and check their comprehension!)

While we continue to encourage students to read paper whenever possible, we have to also work on addressing how to read screens in a way that is more efficient as we question how much longer the textbooks will be used in education.

What is academic coaching and why does it work? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Academic coaching is one of the best interventions for students of average to near-average capabilities because unlike tutoring, learning and executing on the goal setting process and self management is valuable not only for academics but for life beyond school. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What makes coaching effective? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(1) DIRECT instruction of organizational skills⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(2) Goal setting ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(3) Data collection ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(4) Behavioral supports and contracts ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In order for students to make progress, the program has to be individualized and tailored to strengths, weaknesses and each student’s specific needs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So incredibly grateful for the beautiful days we’ve been having. Students are less tense, and just happier. Summer feels so close.
Deficiency in Vitamin D is often linked to higher levels of depression and anxiety. Supplementation of Vitamin D is said to increase happiness, self esteem and as a result productivity. So here is a reminder to get outside and take your Vitamin D!

How does one increase motivation? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While there are self regulation strategies that might be helpful to increase motivation, discipline can not be overlooked. Working on discipline by establishing routines and habits can help one with motivation. Childhood and adolescence are the key stages for habit formation. If students are not practicing important skills and habits at this time, they are losing a chance to build these skills when their brains are programmed to do that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is the reason why many families choose to invest in coaching. It provides an opportunity to guide students develop habits that will help them beyond school. Once keystone habits are formed, student is well on their way to achieve their potential. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When things get difficult, but one has discipline, failure is not an option.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
