You’re five minutes from home.
You glance in the rearview mirror, and there it is: the slumping head, the heavy eyelids - the 5:15pm car nap.
You sing. You crack a window. You turn the radio up. Too late -?8 minutes of deep sleep before you’ve even pulled onto the driveway.
And straight away: “That’s it. Bedtime’s ruined.”
It isn’t.
Here’s what’s actually happening, and what to do about it tonight.
What’s going on:
After 6+ hours of stimulation at nursery, your child’s brain is genuinely exhausted. The motion and warmth of the car flips their nervous system into sleep mode almost instantly - it’s biology doing exactly what it’s meant to.
Why it matters:
Even an 8-minute snooze takes the edge off the sleep pressure they need to fall asleep easily later. Not gone - just dented.
How to rescue the evening:
•Don’t push bedtime back by hours. That usually backfires into overtiredness. Add 15-20 minutes to their normal bedtime instead and let the pressure rebuild naturally.
•Keep things low-key once you’re home. 10 minutes on the floor together, no rushing into dinner or bath - let their nervous system settle before anything else starts.
•If it’s happening most days, a crunchy snack or a cold flannel to hold in the car can sometimes help keep them from tipping over into sleep on the drive.
One car nap doesn’t undo your routine. You’re managing the end-of-day juggle better than you think.
Save this for the next time you catch that head slump in the mirror. 🌙
