Last week cadets went through their first assessment for the POPAT, or Peace Officer Physical Abilities Test. This physical assessment is designed to evaluate the fitness of law enforcement candidates. The POPAT includes running, obstacle courses, weight carrying, and other exercises that mimic police work. As a part of crowd management training, BLET cadets are introduced to riot control agents CS and CN. As a part of this training, they are exposed to CN gas in an indoor confined setting as well as CS gas in an outdoor setting. Exposure to these irritants gives the cadets a realistic experience of the effects on individuals should it become necessary to deploy them. Cadets are also trained to use different line formations to control a crowd.
