🎉 We are SO excited and thankful to celebrate our Frederick Douglass Elementary School teachers who received Wilson Education Partnership Mini-Grants! These grants provide exciting opportunities for our teachers to bring learning to life through hands-on experiences, creativity, collaboration, and exploration.

🌱 Mrs. Hayes – The Living Lab: Raised Bed Gardening and Hands-On Ecosystems will give students opportunities to explore gardening and ecosystems through meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.

🔨 Ms. Burch – Materials for Building the Future: Hands-On STEM Exploration for K–5 Students will provide materials for students to explore, create, build, and problem-solve through STEM.

🔬 Mrs. Beckstead – Science activity boxes will bring learning to life across units such as weather, the human body, force and motion, and ecosystems. With materials for cooperative groups, students will have opportunities to investigate, collaborate, and learn together.

🎲 Mrs. Autry – Learning Through Play: Building Strong Thinkers One Game at a Time will encourage students to develop critical thinking skills through engaging, purposeful play.

STEM Shoutout to Ms. DeLaRosa’s class!

Students worked together to write multi-step word problems in Spanish using a Spanish vocabulary word bank. They collaborated, practiced their math vocabulary, and put their problem-solving skills to work while learning in two languages! Way to work together and SOAR!



¡Reconocimiento STEM para la clase de la Sra. DeLaRosa!

Los estudiantes trabajaron juntos para escribir problemas matemáticos de varios pasos en español utilizando un banco de palabras de vocabulario en español. Colaboraron, practicaron el vocabulario matemático y pusieron en práctica sus habilidades para resolver problemas mientras aprendían en dos idiomas. ¡Sigan trabajando juntos y volando alto!

A big shoutout to Ms. Autry for being a guest reader in Ms. Allen’s second-grade class! She brought the perfect mix of drama, enthusiasm, and excitement to story time, keeping students engaged and making the book come to life. It was so much fun watching the students enjoy the story! 🏘️ Building Towns Through STEM! 🏗️

Ms. Allen’s students have been exploring North Carolina’s geography and learning how location affects the way people live! 🌎 Students designed their own towns based on the region of North Carolina they wanted to live in, describing their town’s climate, physical characteristics, and location.

To bring their ideas to life, students used 3D pens to create a building that would belong in their town! We love seeing students combine geography, creativity, and hands-on learning! 💡



🏘️ ¡Construyendo pueblos a través de STEM! 🏗️

¡Los estudiantes de la clase de la Sra. Allen han estado explorando la geografía de Carolina del Norte y aprendiendo cómo la ubicación influye en la forma en que viven las personas! 🌎 Los estudiantes diseñaron sus propios pueblos según la región de Carolina del Norte donde querían ubicarlos, describiendo el clima, las características físicas y la ubicación de cada pueblo.

🌎🎉 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage! 🎉🌎

Yesterday and today, we had an amazing time enjoying the Hispanic Heritage event organized by Mrs. Reyes’s 4th and 5th grade students! 🇪🇸🇲🇽🇦🇷

Through their Traveling Suitcases, the students shared fascinating facts about the countries they were assigned. They introduced each country, shared information about its traditional foods and dances, and even presented a delicious traditional dessert! 🍰💃🌮

They also gave out candies to students who participated and interacted with them, making the experience even more special! 🍬😊

Our students had a wonderful time! They were so excited and listened attentively to each presentation. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about different cultures, traditions, and countries while celebrating the richness of the Hispanic world. ❤️🌎

A big THANK YOU, Mrs. Reyes, and congratulations to your amazing 4th and 5th graders for such a wonderful and enriching experience! 👏🎉

¡Ayer y hoy disfrutamos de una maravillosa actividad para celebrar la Herencia Hispana, organizada por los estudiantes de 4.º y 5.º grado de la Sra. Reyes! 🇪🇸🇲🇽🇦🇷

A través de sus maletas viajeras, los estudiantes compartieron datos interesantes sobre los países que les fueron asignados. Presentaron cada país, compartieron información sobre sus comidas y bailes tradicionales, ¡e incluso presentaron un delicioso postre típico! 🍰💃🌮

También repartieron dulces a los estudiantes que participaron e interactuaron con ellos, ¡haciendo que la experiencia fuera aún más especial! 🍬😊

¡Nuestros estudiantes disfrutaron muchísimo! Estaban muy emocionados y escucharon atentamente cada presentación. Fue una excelente oportunidad para aprender sobre diferentes culturas, tradiciones y países, mientras celebrábamos la riqueza del mundo hispano. ❤️🌎

Several of our Frederick Douglass Elementary School teachers (Ms. Beckstead, Ms. Reyes, Ms. Hayes, and Ms. DeLaRosa) are spending their evening at the monthly ECU STEM Supper Club, learning new ways to bring building, coding, and creativity into the classroom!

This month, teachers are using Hummingbird Robotics Kits, micro:bits, servos, and craft supplies to build and program motorized bees that recreate the bee waggle dance. Yes, there are googly eyes involved, too!

We love seeing our teachers try new things and learn alongside one another as they find creative ways to bring hands-on STEM experiences back to our students.



Varios de nuestros maestros de la Escuela Primaria Frederick Douglass están pasando la tarde en el Club STEM mensual de ECU, aprendiendo nuevas formas de incorporar la construcción, la programación y la creatividad en el salón de clases.

Third Grade Town Planners in the Making!

Earlier this week, Ms. Autry’s third graders put their knowledge of North Carolina geography to work by designing and building their own NC towns! Students considered the regions, climate, and location as they planned their towns and brought their buildings to life using 3D pens.

We love seeing our students connect social studies, science, and technology through hands-on learning and creativity!

🥕 Creepy Carrots STEM Challenge! 🥕

Last week, Mrs. Modlin’s first graders brought Creepy Carrots! to life with a hands-on STEM challenge! After practicing their retelling skills and putting the story’s events in order, students became engineers and worked together to build fences using only popsicle sticks and clothespins.

Their goal? Build a fence that could stand on its own and keep those creepy carrots from escaping! Students used teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills to test and improve their designs.

We love seeing our young engineers put their learning into action!



🥕 ¡Desafío STEM de Creepy Carrots! 🥕

¡La semana pasada, los estudiantes de primer grado de la Sra. Modlin dieron vida al libro Creepy Carrots! con un desafío STEM práctico! Después de practicar cómo volver a contar la historia y ordenar sus acontecimientos, los estudiantes se convirtieron en ingenieros y trabajaron juntos para construir cercas usando solamente palitos de madera y pinzas para la ropa.

¿Su misión? ¡Construir una cerca que se mantuviera de pie por sí sola y evitara que las zanahorias aterradoras escaparan! Los estudiantes utilizaron el trabajo en equipo, la creatividad y la resolución de problemas para probar y mejorar sus diseños.

¡Nos encanta ver a nuestros pequeños ingenieros poner en práctica lo que aprenden!

Our first and second graders have been exploring the world of art through the work of Vincent van Gogh! With his famous Sunflowers painting as inspiration, students are learning about primary and secondary colors and experimenting with different types of lines to create their own artwork in Mrs. Walston’s art class.

We love seeing our young artists get creative, explore new techniques, and express themselves through art!
