On June 10th I got an email I thought at first was a joke. Josh contacted me with a very short message saying he would be coming to my area in the next 2 days and was hoping he could come by to interview me for the Woodturning Magazine. Thankfully he put some credentials in his signature that I looked at to check on who he was.

I replied back saying I was surprised and grateful for the opportunity to be featured in this magazine. We met up the next day and had a fantastic conversation about the craft and my journey on how I became a Woodturner, what I make and the life looks long influences that still shape part of my craft.

A few years ago when I was setting up my own work station I made holders for the jaws from the Easy Chuck by EasyWoodTools I liked the design and it made storage better, but I discovered that the wooden I-beams would break when dropped. So I hadn't made them for the student stations fearing constant repair.

My wife, Tawney, got a X-Tool M1 ultra laser xToolOfficial to meet her crafting needs about a year ago. I have enjoyed watching her play with it and checked the standard 3mm plywood to see if it would fit in the grove of the jaws and it did.

I asked Tawney if I could borrow her laser to design a better holder for the jaws using her laser (always ask to use someone else's tools). She showed me some basics and off I went. The new holder fits the jaws perfectly either direction. The largest set does have to alternate direction, but even that is not a problem.

The hanger is on a French cleet system to allow one to bring the jaws to the lathe for quick change out (photo 3&4).

Photo 6 and 6 show a student station before and after the update. The jaws had been just put back into the boxes when changed out. It looks much cleaner now.
The last photo shows the original design and the broken part on one of them.

The best part about these is, other than the plywood and some screws, the rest was made from scrap that I should have thrown away years ago. I used poplar, cherry, African mahogany, and some cedar.

A few years ago when I was building out my work station I came up with the first version of this jaw holder for the Easy Chuck by EasyWoodTools

In general it worked fine, but I had times where I had to replace the I-beams because I dropped the holder. So I was hesitant to build them for the student stations fearing constant repair.

About a year ago my wife, Tawney, bought a laser for her crafting needs and I finally asked if I could borrow it. I had tested that the 3mm plywood was the perfect thickness for the cam lock gaps on the jaws. Then I designed the holder(frame 2). I placed them on a backer with a French cleet holder so they can be moved closer to the lathe when changing the jaws (frame 3&4). Photos 5 & 6 show the difference the jaws in their original boxes and the wall mounted holders make. The last photo shows my original design.

Now I need to make chuck holders to complete the setup.

When I went to SWAT this year I wasn't looking for anything. So I have a small haul this year. First is the Turner's Bowl Finish from Turners Warehouse . I got a chance to use it during my demos and was tremendously impressed by how well it works and the price. I bought this and plan to use it soon. I picked up some Axminster Tools centers. The Light pull center, because I have had several occasions when I thought hey I wish I had one to turn this, a multi-tooth live center to match a drive center I already have, and a match drive and live safety center to play with for teaching the skew. I won the epoxy putty from Starbond Premium Superglues when I visited their booth and am interested in trying it out. The blank was a left over blank for the demos I was told I could have. I think I will make the hollow form design during my first demo to practice that technique. SWAT was great as ever. I got to meet turners I have never met in person, make new friends, and see all of my friends that I only get the chance to see here. I look forward to next year.

Last week I was contacted by Martin from Goebel Furniture contacted me needing some draw pulls made in African Blackwood and Ebony for a piece he was building, and quickly. I have been wanting to collaborate with him so I agreed to knock them out before SWAT. I got them in the mail yesterday. Tricky bit of turning, but fun to make. I can't wait to see them in the final piece.

I made a style dome box. The Alamo Woodturner's Association is a supporting chapter of the Southwest Association of Woodturner's commonly called SWAT. Every year we are asked to make decorations for the Saturday night meal during the symposium. This year they want boxes. So at our guild meeting last Thursday I was given 7 boxes from two of our members to bring up for SWAT, shown in the last photo. I showed them to Tawney and she really liked the shape of the two boxes made in the style that Benoit made famous. I met him in 2018 at the Utah State symposium I had seen him demo this box, but completely forgot how he did it. So I found a demo on YouTube in French. I may not have understood what he said, but it had great camera work of how he was making all of the cuts. So yesterday I had some fun playing with a piece of Spalted Pecan that I was going to make a box out of anyway. The shape really shows off the grain of the wood. The second photo shows the inside of the lid. I got it a little thin up near the top of the dome. Fun box and one I will work on again.

Six years ago today I had a table saw accident that led to having what is called a ray amputation of my left index finger. The damage was too great to attach the part of my finger that was cut off. I will say in general I have adapted well. I can do most everything I could do before my accident. Few people notice unless I point it out. I own a now and as I showed earlier this year when I nicked the blade with a finger they work very well at saving body parts that come in contact with a table saw. Accidents happen so fast, I was using push sticks when this happened. You just don't know, so be safe as you can in the shop.
