Meet Catherine Brown, Madison Heistand, and Riptide!

Catherine Brown is from Elizabethtown, Kentucky and has been riding since she was just four years old. She first took Western riding lessons, but later became involved with English riding. She owns an Oldenburg mare who she used to compete in dressage and show jumping with. Her favorite thing about the Service Mounts program is all the little moments she gets to share with her friends between class; trail rides, bathing horses, etc.

Madison Heistand is from Henderson, Kentucky and has been around horses from the age of thirteen. She has a few horses of her own and currently boards her quarter horse mare at Asbury. Her favorite aspect about the Service Mounts program is all the obstacles and desensitization that the students get to do with their assigned horses.

Riptide is a two-year-old Thoroughbred-Percheron cross. He is the tallest R c**t, standing at 16.2hh as of April 2026. He loves getting scratches and munching on grain. A fun fact is that Riptide is learning liberty skills.

Meet Aiden Sterner and Ripple!

Aiden is from Indiana and has always loved animals, especially horses. She took horseback riding lessons in middle school and later stumbled upon Asbury University’s Equine Program. She says, “It’s still a surreal blessing to be here! It’s such a blessing to be able to study under so many professionals and learn so much about equine all at one time… I’m super grateful for this opportunity.” Her favorite part about the Service Mounts Program is that the end goal is very rewarding. The training that we do at Asbury goes beyond the students and the horses; it extends to all the officers, civilians, and communities that our horses will serve in the future.

Ripple is a two-year-old Percheron-Thoroughbred gelding. A fun fact is that he is extremely flexible and always performs interesting poses and stretches, including Downward-Facing Dog and Tripod, to name a few. His favorite activity with Aiden is going for walks. The easiest thing for Ripple to understand is new cues; he is very smart and learns fast. He gets along with the entire R herd well, but his ultimate best friend is Ruby.

Meet Sarah Puttbach and Rhythm!

Sarah is from Hopatcong, New Jersey. She grew up attending horse summer camps which led her to working with the camp horses for the past four years and becoming their barn manager this summer. Her favorite part of Asbury’s Service Mounts Program is that the students are responsible for the training of their horse. Sarah says, “The program is very hands-on, and I like that as we learn to train, we are also teaching our training horse.” Being able to start her c**t, Rhythm, has been her biggest accomplishment. After Asbury, Sarah would like to have an equine job that travels so that she can gain as much experience as possible before settling down on her own farm and establishing her own training and lesson program.

Rhythm is a two-year-old Percheron-Thoroughbred mare. A fun fact about her is that she has one white heel bulb, and the rest of her body is black. She loves scratches, especially on her neck, chest, or under her chin. She enjoys learning new skills that require movement, such as line driving and side-passing. She was one of the last R c**ts to be caught, but now she comes every time Sarah calls for her. Together, Sarah and Rhythm enjoy desensitization clinics, and Rhythm is often stuck wearing new silly accessories while exploring obstacles.

Meet Charles Whisenhunt and Ranger!

Charles is from Clemmons, North Carolina, and grew up with horses in his neighborhood. His equine journey began when he took riding lessons with Paso Finos. His goals include becoming a horse trainer and participating in cutting and cowboy-mounted shooting. He already shoots competitively through the Amateur Trapshooting Association. His favorite aspect of the Asbury Equine Program is that you have the unique opportunity to bond with your training horse. It makes his day every time Ranger chooses to hang out with Charles.

Ranger is a three-year-old Belgian-Morgan cross gelding. His favorite pastime is grazing and snacking on anything edible. He will come to anyone calling his name in the field, especially if food is involved. While not at work, Ranger can be found hanging out with Royal, Rhythm, or Ruby.

Early this morning two more horses left to join their Units! We had the honor of spending the week facilitating clinics for the officers and these horses! Prophet was trained by Sophia Baig. Pistachio was trained by Katelyn Booth and Hannah Southard. We know these horses will do great things and have great partners in store at Bethlehem PA Mounted Unit!
