Freire Wilmington students recently took learning beyond the classroom with a visit to Delaware’s Legislative Hall, where they had the opportunity to meet with state leaders,and learn more about the legislative process firsthand, and receive a Senate tribute from Sen. Dan Cruce for our Freire Forward professional prep program.

A highlight of the day was hearing senior Brandon C. deliver a powerful speech about the impact of Freire's Freire Forward Experienceship program. Brandon shared how these opportunities have helped him explore career pathways, build professional skills, and prepare for life after high school.

Students also engaged in meaningful conversations with Senator Cruce and Senator Elizabeth Lockman, gaining insight into public service, leadership, and the importance of civic engagement.

We are grateful to our elected officials for welcoming our students and helping inspire the next generation of leaders, advocates, and changemakers.

Hasaan started with us in his 8th grade year. He’s a member of our media team, a student ambassador, runs indoor and outdoor track, and is our basketball team manager. His hard work, leadership, and dedication both in and out of the classroom truly set him apart. We couldn’t be more proud to see him recognized at this level. Freire Wilmington’s 9th Annual BLACKOUT: Unapologetic Black Futures brought our community together for a powerful, student-led celebration of 100 years of Black history and the bold futures ahead.

The night opened with remarks from Delaware State Senator Dan Cruce and featured live performances, a futuristic fashion runway, Theatre of Afrofuturists’ Romeo and Julietta, and an electrifying drumline from Christina Cultural Arts Center.

From Black-owned food vendors to a student art showcase and line dance party, BLACKOUT was creativity, culture, and excellence on full display.

Students brought innovation and energy to life at the Renewable Energy Lab Challenge at Freire Wilmington yesterday! As part of our 9th Annual BLACKOUT Experience, this event was hosted by Marcus Garvey Education Academy in partnership with Engineering Tomorrow and Chemours STEM Community Hub. Students designed and built hybrid renewable energy structures while exploring wind and solar power concepts hands-on. A powerful celebration of creativity, STEM, and Black excellence!
