🌊🧪 Estuary science in action! Today in science class, students used a simple demonstration to model what happens when cold, dense seawater meets warmer freshwater in an estuary. We watched how the different water masses interacted and used our observations to discuss density, mixing, and the unique conditions found where rivers meet the ocean. 🔬💧

Sometimes the best way to understand what’s happening in a huge ecosystem is to model it right on the lab table!

🍪⛏️ Yesterday, our students explored the environmental impacts of obtaining, distributing, and transmitting energy through a hands-on mining simulation!

Students became “miners” as they attempted to extract chocolate chips from cookies without damaging the surrounding cookie. It was much easier said than done—and provided a powerful model for understanding how mining can disrupt the land and ecosystems surrounding a mine. 🌎

We then examined the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana, and learned about the environmental devastation caused by copper mining during the electrification of America. This lesson helped students recognize that the energy and technology we depend on often come with environmental costs that must be carefully considered. ⚡🔌

💙 Thankful Thursday! 💙

This week, our students used infrared cameras to investigate heat islands around our campus. They identified hotspots, examined how different surfaces absorb and retain heat, and began proposing practical solutions to help cool these areas. 🌡️☀️🌳

A special thank-you to STEM SENC and all of our past DonorsChoose donors who helped provide these cameras. Your generosity continues to give our students opportunities to use real scientific tools, collect meaningful data, and investigate problems within their own community. We are incredibly grateful for your support! 🙌🔬

NEW 4-H Event Coming to New Hanover County!

Join us for the Southeast 4-H District S.T.E.M. Day on Saturday, September 26, at the N. C. Cooperative Extension, New Hanover County Center and Arboretum.

Youth ages 10–18 are invited to participate in a fun-filled day of hands-on STEM activities, learning, and exploration with 4-H members from across the Southeast District!

Event Details:

Date: Saturday, September 26
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location: N. C. Cooperative Extension, New Hanover County Center and Arboretum, 6206 Oleander Drive, Wilmington NC 28403
Ages: 10–18 in the Southeast 4-H District
Cost: $25 per participant (includes lunch)
All youth must be 4-H Online approved!
Registration Deadline: September 11 by 5:00 p.m.

🐝🌼 As I was cleaning up and getting ready to leave school today after spending the day working outside, I found myself reflecting on just how much has changed this school year.

I stopped for a moment to watch a bumblebee on a flower and realized something incredible: none of this was here last fall.

In just 9–10 months, we’ve created a pollinator garden, an outdoor classroom, improved our outdoor workspaces, and transformed areas of our campus into places where students can learn, explore, and connect with nature. 🌱🌻

None of this would have been possible without the amazing support of so many people. Thank you to our students, teachers, administrative team, Lifepoint Church, the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, World Wildlife Fund, Keep NC Beautiful, Murray Middle School PTA, New Hanover County Compost Department , our community volunteers, and everyone else who donated their time, resources, encouragement, and hard work to make these projects a reality. ❤️

Next year will be especially meaningful as we celebrate our 25th anniversary. I’m incredibly grateful to have called Murray Middle School home for 20 of those years.

I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved summer. Thank you for helping us grow something special. We can’t wait to see what we accomplish together when we’re back in the fall! 🌿☀️🐝
