🇬🇷 The Peplos Kore — a glimpse of ancient Athens in color.

Created around 530 BC, this remarkable statue once stood on the Athenian Acropolis. What appears today as pale marble was once far more vivid: surviving traces of pigment remind us that many ancient Greek sculptures were originally painted in rich colors.

More than 2,500 years later, her expression still carries the elegance and artistry of Archaic Greece.

There were over 1,000 city-states in ancient , but the main poleis were Athína (Athens), Spárti (Sparta), Kórinthos (Corinth), Thíva (Thebes), Siracusa (Syracuse), Égina (Aegina), Ródos (Rhodes), Árgos, Erétria, and Elis. Each city-state ruled itself, including all of the tribes, but subsequently became a collective to form our modern .

An extraordinary and heartwarming scene unfolded in the village of Margarites in Mylopotamos, Crete, during the August 15 celebrations, when local residents found a very special way to make sure a bedridden elderly woman could take part in the festivities.

Unable to walk, the grandmother was brought to the village celebration together with the sun lounger on which she was resting. Instead of remaining at home while the rest of the village gathered for the traditional feast, she was carried directly to the event and placed in front of the stage where the musicians were performing.

The moment quickly became one of the most memorable scenes of the celebration. Several men lifted the grandmother and her lounger and carried her through the gathering, while the crowd applauded and celebrated around her. Even the elderly woman herself joined in, clapping along to the sounds of traditional Cretan music.

The unusual moment was captured on video and shared on social media by Cretan musician Petros Maroulis, who summed up the scene with the comment: “Only in Margarites can something like this happen.”

Behind the humorous and unexpected images was a simple gesture of affection and solidarity. The villagers did not want the elderly woman to be left alone at home while the entire community gathered to celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

The scene quickly stood out as a quintessential example of the communal spirit that remains at the heart of traditional Cretan village celebrations: nobody is left behind when the whole community comes together to celebrate.
