Although not strictly a St. Edmond's Academy photograph, this dated photograph taken in June 1958 at Ursuline Academy helps establish the timeline for our class. Graduation from Ursuline Academy was a year away, followed by enrollment at St. Edmond's Academy in the Fall of 1959. Note in the lower left corner that someone brought serious photographic equipment to this graduation!

These could have been the BEFORE pictures IF our rappelling experience on the cliffs overlooking the Brandywine River had turned tragic. Considering we had no experience, only ropes and there were six of us ... well, best NOT to consider that outcome!

St. Edmond's Academy is so strongly identified with red blazers that most have forgotten the original dress code ... long-sleeve light-gray sweaters over white shirts and ties with dark-grey slacks. Fellow Class of 1963 schoolmates "Indian wrestle" on the side yard of 1301 Delaware Avenue in our first school uniforms.

New technology allows more information to be extracted from old photographs, but this is it ... the original will go through the shredder before it fades into oblivion. Who can you identify from the St. Edmond's Academy Class of 1963?

What is missing from this photograph? My red St. Edmond's Academy blazer! I recognize the scene, I recognize Brother Christopher, but for the life of me I can't explain why I am "out of uniform" ... what would be the occasion that our red blazers were unacceptable in our own school?

How did we survive childhood? This group of St. Edmond's Academy class of 1963 'daredevils' decided to conquer the cliffs of Alapocas State Park ... the steep side overlooking the Brandywine River! From the "bottom of the rope" are John Hannan, Steve Kramlik, Don Barday, 'Jamie' Jamison and Tom Gunnip (RiP). Photo by Peter Christy who wisely found a safe perch from which to take the picture!

June 9, 1963 was graduation day for the 8th grade class at the "new school" on Veale Road, but the same class had started 5th grade in the Fall of 1959 at the "old school" on Delaware Avenue.

Someone from our class had a great idea … let’s go rappelling down the cliffs west of Alapocas bordering the Brandywine River. Youth, strength and enthusiasm notwithstanding, that was a dangerous endeavor, but we all survived … although I don’t remember that there was much rappelling involved!
