Dear NHCS Staff and Families,
After consulting with our local Emergency Management partners and reviewing the most recent weather briefing, which indicates that severe conditions may arrive earlier than originally expected, New Hanover County Schools will operate on a remote learning day for students tomorrow, Monday, March 16, 2026.
The safety of our students, staff, and families is always our first priority. Based on the updated forecast, we believe shifting students to a remote day is the most responsible step to ensure everyone remains safe.
Staff members should expect a follow-up email with additional guidance for the day.
Students and families will hear directly from their individual schools regarding assignments and expectations for remote learning.
In addition, all extracurricular activities, athletics, and after-school events scheduled for tomorrow are cancelled.
We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we respond to changing weather conditions. Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our school community safe.
Sincerely,
Christopher R. Barnes, Ed.D.
Superintendent
New Hanover County Schools
Atentamente,
Christopher R. Barnes,
Superintendente de las Escuelas del Condado de New Hanover

Wildcat Class of 2024 families: We have news to share about graduation.
We learned recently that improvements at Legion Stadium will not be complete in time for graduation, and we made the decision to move the ceremony to the newly remodeled Brogden Hall.
Date/Time: June 7 at 7 p.m.
Location: Brogden Hall, NHHS Campus
Tickets: 5 per graduate
Brogden is the heart of our school and the true “Home of the Wildcats,” and we know walking at graduation in this space will be a special experience for the Class of 2024.
We have a team of school and district leaders working to ensure the transition to this new venue will be seamless and that every graduate receives the recognition they deserve.
A special New Hanover Class of 2024 Graduation webpage is in the works and it will provide answers to logistical questions students and families may have. We will share it as soon as it’s available.

The State Championship game tomorrow March 16, at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston Salem, NC at 7:30 pm. We will be taking a charter bus of students and staff to the game leaving at 1:00 pm tomorrow. There are only about 10 spots left on the bus. If you would like to ride to the game on this bus, students must bring a signed parent/guardian permission form (which is attached to this email) and $30 to the Princess Street gym tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 pm. This will be first come, first serve. Students that put their names on the list this afternoon at school have already solidified a spot on the bus. This $30 dollar field trip fee does not include the ticket to the game. Students will still need to purchase a ticket to attend the Final Four game with this link or buy a ticket at the game. If you are going to the game, please remember that concessions at the Coliseum require a credit card and cash is not accepted. Students please remember our values for Integrity and Respect while at the game. We hold ourselves to the highest level of sportsmanship and behavior at New Hanover and while representing ourselves at events away from campus. We have been advised that we cannot leave the stands during or after the game. If we leave the seating area or access the court level at any time we will be removed from the Coliseum, and it will jeopardize our team’s participation in the event.
