WHEN TO USE INTERPROXIMAL STRIPPING
1. Mild–Moderate Crowding
Space discrepancy: ~2–6 mm per arch
Ideal alternative to extractions when expansion or proclination is undesirable
Common in non-growing patients or where skeletal correction is limited
2. Bolton Tooth-Size Discrepancies
Anterior or overall Bolton excess, usually mandibular anterior excess
Helps achieve the ideal overjet and overbite at finishing
3. Finishing and Detailing
To:
Eliminate black triangles
Improve contact point shape
Fine-tune alignment after leveling
4. Relapse Management
In adults with post-treatment crowding
Especially effective in the lower anterior region
5. Profile and Periodontal Considerations
When further incisor proclination would harm facial esthetics
In patients with thin labial bone, where expansion is risky
WHERE TO USE INTERPROXIMAL STRIPPING
IPR is ideal after alignment and leveling (best control and access), and sometimes staged gradually during space creation. However, heavy
stripping needs to be avoided before rotations are corrected. IPR shouldn’t be done when there is a high caries risk or poor oral hygiene, enamel hypoplasia or severe fluorosis, or teeth with short roots or sensitivity issues. It’s contraindicated for very young patients with large pulp chambers as well.
Most Common Sites
1. Mandibular Anterior Teeth (Canine–Canine)
Most frequent location
Thick enamel and high relapse tendency
Typical reduction: 0.25 mm per contact
2. Maxillary Anterior Teeth
Used mainly for:
Bolton discrepancies
Black triangle correction
More conservative than lower arch
3. Posterior Teeth (Premolars/Molars)
Although less common, used when:
Anterior stripping is insufficient
Crowding is generalized
Enamel is thicker, but access and sensitivity risk are higher
There is a reason why they always demonstrate these handheld strips on typodonts. Because in vivo, you can’t put both of your hands in the
patient’s mouth to perform an IPR process like in the picture.
When choosing an IPR system, choose a safer, faster, more professional, practical, efficient, & LESS EXPENSIVE IPR method that your practice deserves. Choose the Ortho-Byte IPR handpiece & save both time & money.

Clinical Benefits of Smarch ThermIQ Heat-Activated Archwires
1. Deliver Light, Continuous, Physiologic Forces
Heat-activated NiTi wires are soft & flexible at lower temperatures (room temperature) & become active at mouth temperature (≈35–37°C). This allows them to deliver gentle, constant forces, which:
· optimize the biologic response of the periodontal ligament
· reduce hyalinization & tissue damage
· support efficient tooth movement
2. Improved Patient Comfort
Because they activate gradually, they exert lower initial force peaks than conventional NiTi. This leads to:
· less initial soreness
· smoother force delivery
· better early patient compliance
3. Faster Initial Alignment
Their gradual activation ensures consistent propulsion of teeth into alignment. Numerous clinical trials show that heat-activated wires can achieve quicker early alignment, particularly in cases of:
· moderate–severe crowding
· rotations
· malposed teeth that require gentle engagement
4. Easier Engagement in Crowded Cases
At lower temperatures, the wire becomes more pliable, which makes it easier to place into crowded or rotated brackets without:
· distortion
· excessive ligation force
· patient discomfort during placement
This reduces chair time & improves bonding efficiency.
5. Reduced Need for Early Wire Changes
Because the force-deflection curve is smooth & wide, heat-activated wires remain effective for a longer span, which means:
· fewer archwire changes
· fewer clinical visits
· stable, predictable force levels over time
6. Better Control During Placement and Activation
Clinicians can modify the wire’s behavior by temperature:
· cooling → wire becomes more flexible for easy ligation
· warming → wire stiffens & activates force delivery
This gives orthodontists more control over wire handling & reduces chair time.
7. Decreased Incidence of Unwanted Side Effects
The gradual activation reduces risks of:
· root resorption associated with force spikes
· bracket debonding due to high initial forces
· excessive tipping or rotation
“Heat-activated NiTi wires have transformed the first phase of treatment, patients experience less discomfort & I achieve alignment faster & more consistently.” Dr. A. Smith, DDS, MS, Board-Certified Orthodontist
“These wires allow predictable force delivery & reduce the need for adjustments. A must-have in any efficient orthodontic practice.” Professor L. Nakamura, Department of Orthodontics

CLINICAL BENEFITS OF POSTED STAINLESS STEEL ARCHWIRES – Laser Mounted vs Silver Soldering
The built-in posts allow elastics, coil springs, or power chains to be attached at controlled locations, reducing reliance on crimped hooks which may shift. This enhances anchorage control & predictable mechanics for space closure or Class II/III correction.
As the wire is dimensionally stable & stiff, it supports sliding mechanics
with minimal deformation of the wire, allowing better force transmission. The
unmatched low surface roughness of our wires helps reduce friction.
For maximum control & torque expression during finishing or detailing stages, posted stainless steel wires give the orthodontist more control over tooth positions (torque, angulation) because they resist deformation & provide a rigid guide.
Because the posts are pre-mounted, the clinician can reduce time customizing hooks or stops, improving efficiency. (posted wires reduce chairside time vs crimping/securing hooks.)
The corrosion resistance & lower cytotoxicity of stainless steel mean fewer
concerns about metal ion release, & the durability supports longer service
life under higher loads.
Stainless steel is less expensive & posted versions allow controlled mechanics
without switching to exotic alloys.
WHY LASER WELDING?
When it comes to precision, strength, & aesthetics, laser welding dramatically
outperforms traditional silver soldering in both strength & durability.
Laser-welded joints achieve up to 520 MPa tensile strength, more than double that of brazed joints (~198 MPa). In fracture tests, laser-welded joints achieved a fracture load of up to 826 N, surpassing that of silver soldering for exceptional durability.
- Unmatched Metal Integrity
Laser welding uses a highly localized laser beam that minimizes heat diffusion. This preserves the wire’s original strength, elasticity, & springiness,
maintaining its mechanical integrity & preventing weakening or annealing
seen with torch soldering.
- Stronger, Cleaner, & Corrosion-Resistant Joints
Through precise micro-welding, laser technology produces cleaner, stronger, & more consistent bonds with less filler material. Unlike silver soldering, which can create voids or porosity, laser-welded joints are robust & resist galvanic corrosion, ensuring long-term reliability & performance.
- Superior Biocompatibility & Aesthetics
Laser welding requires no flux or foreign metals, eliminating residue &
irritation risks. The result? A clean, smooth, & biocompatible finish that
not only looks professional but enhances comfort & hygiene.
- Precision Engineering Meets Practical Efficiency
Laser welding delivers exceptional speed & repeatability. Its pinpoint accuracy makes it ideal for delicate components such as archwires or molar tubes. While the initial investment is higher for us, the payoff comes in quality, consistency, & reduced rework for you.
