August is National Make a Will Month, and we think it's important to talk about it.

Here's why:

End of life plans allow donors to make a significant contribution that may not have been possible during the donor’s lifetime, ensuring a lasting impact for the causes they care about. In this way, donors continue to shape their communities in meaningful ways, even after they are gone.

Making a will doesn't have to feel overwhelming.
You can speak to your lawyer or explore free educational resources that can help you make informed decisions for your future--and ours.

Here are some educational resources that may help:

CFLC honors the memory of long-time volunteer and literacy champion, Geneva Reid.

Geneva started tutoring in the Adult Literacy program in 2004 as soon as she retired to Wilmington. Over 15 years, she taught students 1-on-1 and helped lead the Tutor Training Team. Hundreds of volunteer tutors remember Geneva as their workshop teacher; they described her as “vibrant, inspiring, and impressive.” Later, Geneva joined the Board of Directors and, with husband Frank, was a member of the Literacy Trust 100.

Geneva was a caring teacher, a passionate advocate for education, and a dear friend. We will miss her brilliant mind and kind heart; we’re forever grateful that she shared them purposefully with the Literacy Council.

There will be a celebration of Geneva's life at Church of the Servant on September 12th at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to one of the non-profits Geneva was involved in: Cape Fear Literacy Council, the Dance Cooperative, Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, WHQR, Adult Scholars at UNCW, and the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning (OLLI) at UNCW.

Today we're celebrating! We recently received a $1,000 Spark Good local grant from Walmart Store #1392, Walmart Wilmington - Sigmon Rd. This grant supports our work to provide free education to adult learners in our community. CFLC gives students the skills to improve employment opportunities, navigate healthcare systems, and obtain their GED or U.S. citizenship, and much more! Thank you, Walmart!

Do you want to give back in your community? We're looking for volunteer tutors! 🧐

Digital Literacy tutors need basic computer skills and the ability to communicate patiently and effectively with clients of varying backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities, but no previous teaching experience or advanced IT/coding skills are required. 🫶

CFLC serves between 500-600 adult learners each year, and our tutors make that possible. Learn more at www.cfliteracy.org/digital-literacy-faq/ and be a part of positive change through education.

🌟 Know someone who should be a tutor? Tag them in the comments! 🌟
