Watson College Betty Stike Ed Lab The Betty Stike Ed Lab at the UNCW is designed as a critical component of our teacher education programs.

Students practice the methods they are learning in their courses by teaching a child in a one-on-one setting. Tutoring is designed as a positive experience, focusing on the child's strengths, needs, and interests. Students are coached as they learn new strategies and skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Open communication with parents is also an important part of the Ed Lab experience.

Week 4 of our TPYA Workshop Series at the CMC!

Today, students created sand mosaics: a hands-on, tactile, and sensory experience that encouraged creativity while showing us something larger: even the tiniest grain of sand can make an impact on the bigger picture.

A great reminder that every small piece matters when we work together to create something meaningful.

This week in the Ed Lab, our focus is math—but the bigger focus is how we learn. Whether we’re counting, measuring, problem-solving, building, or exploring patterns, hands-on learning gives children opportunities to make connections, test ideas, and understand the why behind the content.

Our collaborative artwork brings together the creativity of current elementary students, future teachers, Watson employees, and Ed Lab alumni, each contributing an individual popsicle stick.

Local teachers—did you know you can check out CMC materials for your classroom?!

We’re highlighting Ainsley Tyree, a 2nd grade teacher who borrowed our weather toolkit to help her students explore weather tools and observe weather patterns. ☁️🌡️

Ainsley shared that her students loved the cloud charts from the science kits so much, they were even talking about clouds with their families over the weekend! 💙

A huge thank you to UNCW MarineQuest and Center for Education in STEM at UNCW Watson College of Education for an amazing Pop-Up Workshop! From programming Finch robots 🤖 to learning how bird bones help them fly 🪽 to dissecting owl pellets 🦉—we were learning, laughing, and having FUN!

Today kicked off a 6-week collaboration between the CMC and TPYA, with a focus on mindfulness, self-care, connection, and building community.

For our first session, we got creative with team vision boards! Each team reflected on three things:

💛 Something you love
🌟 Something that makes you special
🌱 Something you are learning

Through conversation, creativity, and a little bit of reflection, we’re making space to celebrate who we are, what makes us unique, and where we’re growing.

Science isn’t just something you read about, it’s something you see, touch, test, and wonder about!

Our Future Teachers are creating hands-on learning experiences that turn big science ideas into “WHOA, look at that!” moments. Students explored the properties of water and created their very own rainbow using water-filled jars and paper towels. 🌈💧

And speaking of hands-on science… next week’s Pop-Up Workshops are bringing even MORE ways to make learning come alive!

The Ed Lab & CMC have been buzzing with excitement! 💙📚

From meeting our amazing students and getting our semester underway, to celebrating our Watson Connect raffle winners, there was plenty of energy, smiles, and engaging learning taking place all around!

We’re off to a great start and can’t wait to see all that this semester will bring.
