President Trump has extended the Jones Act waiver for an additional 90 days.

It will now run through November 14, allowing foreign-flagged vessels to continue moving fuel and other essential commodities between U.S. ports.

This comes just weeks after NEFI and the National Propane Gas Association transmitted a coalition letter to the White House on July 24, urging the Administration to extend this critical relief.

However, the extension does come with new limits. Individual voyages will now be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and coverage has narrowed to focus more squarely on energy.

NEFI will continue pressing for a durable, longer-term solution and for meaningful reform of the Jones Act.

Good news out of Washington this week.

About 11 million American households heat their homes with delivered fuels. Heating oil, propane, and renewable blends like Bioheat® fuel keep families warm through the coldest months of the year.

A new bill in the Senate would protect their right to keep doing it.

Senate Energy Committee Chairman Mike Lee has released a draft of the Energy Efficiency Reform Act of 2026, the first serious rewrite of federal appliance standards law since 2007. The piece that matters most to our members and their customers: it would stop state and local governments from banning a heating system because of the fuel it burns.

Too often those decisions get made in a building code update that no homeowner hears about until the day they need a new furnace or boiler. This bill would put a stop to that.

Chairman Lee Introduces Energy Efficiency Reform Act of 2026 August 6, 2026 WASHINGTON — Today, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, introduced the Energy Efficiency Reform Act of 2026, legislation to reform the Department of Energy’s Appl....

NEFI has filed comments with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on how the government calculates whether strict new building energy codes are worth what they cost consumers.

The math matters, as many states base their requirements on the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and inside that code is a point system that decides which HVAC equipment counts. We believe that math is wrong and that major changes are needed. Thankfully, DOE is already moving the right direction. In June, it found that 2024 IECC would increase home construction costs by more than $9.2 billion annually compared to the 2006 code levels and urged the International Code Council to refocus on affordability, transparency, and fuel-neutral efficiency.

How To Get Drivers On The Road With ACE ELDT Services

The National Energy & Fuels Institute has partnered with the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) to offer a time- and cost-efficient way to get new drivers on the road with ACE ELDT Services. As a Registered Training Provider through the Federal Motor Carrier & Safety Administration (FMCSA), NPGA ACE Services provides online courses that meet the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulation for individuals who are in need of their CDL Class A, CDL Class B, and HAZMAT Endorsement. These services allow for companies to get their drivers trained in-house while also saving up to $8,000 per driver. Let us be your ACE!

The ACE Services Program guides individuals through the ELDT requirements set by the FMCSA.

What does ACE do?

Serving as the FMCSA Registered Training Provider, NPGA handles:

FMCSA paperwork and filings
FMCSA audits
Training materials and training equipment guidance to meet FMCSA requirements

NEFI, with seven other national heating fuel and home comfort associations, has written a letter commending the U.S. Department of Energy's updated guidance on IRA home energy rebate programs. These revisions reinstate fuel neutrality in state-administered rebate programs and prohibit the use of heat pump rebates for fuel switching.
