The All Ages, All Stages NC Universal Design Taskforce has developed a new flyer highlighting the benefits of Universal Design (UD), an approach to designing homes and communities that are accessible, safe, and convenient for people of all ages and abilities. The flyer explains how features such as step-free entrances, wider doorways, zero-threshold showers, and improved lighting can help individuals remain independent, reduce fall risks, and make homes more welcoming for everyone. It also emphasizes the value of planning ahead, noting that Universal Design can support aging in place, reduce future renovation costs, and create more inclusive communities. The resource is intended to raise awareness among families, caregivers, builders, developers, and community leaders about how thoughtful design can improve quality of life across the lifespan.

Janaki Beharrysingh, a first-year student enrolled in UNCW’s Master of Science in Applied Gerontology program, was drawn to the field through her own personal experiences with older adults. Her path began while earning her undergraduate degree in health at UNC Asheville. Working at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) introduced her to the realities of aging beyond what she had experienced in her life thus far. In our modern world, we divide up our communities and our activities by age: young people in schools, and older people in retirement communities.

We talk a lot about all the ways we need to help older people. But, perhaps, it's the experience of life in a multigenerational, interdependent, richly complex community that, more than anything else, teaches us how to be human.
