Recap: Our last few days in Japan was eventful. During our time in Japan there were three earthquakes, two typhoons, floods, and landslides reported. While we did not feel the impact of the earthquake we did have a level 4 alert that impacted one of our excursions. We still persevered through the trip. From cheering at the FIFA World Cup match between Japan and Sweden to an unexpected stop at the iconic Umeda Sky Building, our students learned how to adapt to daily occurrences and realities of living in Japan. skybldg.co.jp/en
We boarded the Shinkansen bulletin train to Hiroshima, where the history of Japan and US became sobering. Walking through Peace Memorial Park, exploring the museum, and standing before the Atomic Bomb Dome challenged us to reflect on the devastating cost of war and the enduring importance of peace, hope, and reconciliation.
We crossed by ferry to the beauty of Miyajima Island, where nature, culture, and tradition came together. Yes, despite being told not to pet the deer we had a few deer whisperers.
Dinner at a local Hiroshima izakaya gave us another taste of authentic Japan with gyoza, tamagoyaki, chicken tsukune, salad, rice, and miso soup. We also took the time to celebrate Ms. Palmer’s birthday in a familiar area where she lived in Japan.
We also explored the breathtaking Himeji Castle, one of Japan’s most treasured landmarks, before returning to Osaka. Students wrapped up the day with free time to shop and enjoy the city.
What we thought was our final night in Japan… wasn’t. Stay tuned.
