Thanks to all those in District 12 who participated in a solid Past Master's degree for our three Brothers - Josh Salvatore, Chris Quimbly, and Mac McCotter who were all raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason.

A gathering of Ravens is called an Unkindness. A gathering of Crows is called a Murder. A gathering of Flamingos is called a Flamboyance.

Henceforth, a gathering of Masons is called a Craft. Spread the word.

e.g., "A Craft of Masons met at St. John's Lodge No. 1 on Tuesday night."

Happy Birthday, Brother Amadeus!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), one of history’s greatest musical geniuses, was also a devoted Freemason. He was initiated in 1784 in Vienna into the lodge Zur Wohltätigkeit (“Beneficence”), passed to Fellow Craft in Jan 1785 and became a Master Mason shortly thereafter. He later affiliated with Zur Neugekrönten Hoffnung (“Newly Crowned Hope”). For Mozart, Freemasonry was not a social ornament, but a moral and philosophical home.

Mozart composed several works specifically for Masonic occasions, including Masonic Funeral Music (K. 477) and numerous lodge songs and cantatas. These pieces reflect the solemnity, symbolism, and reverence for Light that characterize our Gentle Craft.

Most famously, The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) is widely understood as a musical allegory of Masonic initiation and enlightenment. Its' themes of moral testing, triumph of wisdom over superstition, and the transformative power of truth mirror the journey of the initiated man seeking Light. A link to The Magic Flute is below.

The Grand Master of Masons in NC Official District 12 Visit to St. John's Lodge No. 1 was engaging and fruitful. We had 67 in attendance preceded by a wonderful meal and fellowship.

Thank you Most Worshipful Steve Norris for your leadership and inspiration.

Where were you first made a Mason? A key lesson to contemplate on your own.

As we enter a brand new Masonic year, chaos isn’t just something “out there” in the world—it’s also internal: habits, beliefs, fears, unfinished business, regrets, neglected duties. These are attributes and lessons taught in our degrees.

Question:

What's an area of Personal or Masonic Chaos do you believe must be confronted—rather than avoided—if real order and harmony is to bear fruit in 2026?

Harmony is not the absence of tension, but the presence of mutual respect.

A few examples to generate discussion:

1. A personal discipline or obligation you’ve avoided?
2. Are we providing proper mentoring to our Brethren?
3. A tradition or practice worth restoring?
4. Masonic responsiblities we keep outsourcing or deflecting?
5. Are we gossiping in the quarries and to what end? Faction or Unity?
6. Are our meetings focused on an enriched experience or getting out in an hour?

This golden urn, created by Paul Revere, contains a lock of George Washington’s hair. It is the property of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, and is ceremonially presented every three years on the Feast Day of Saint John the Evangelist, upon the installation of the new Grand Master of Massachusetts.
