Makia Martin '07 From UNCW’s theatre program to roles on Law & Order: SVU, The Blacklist and Only Murders in the Building, Makia Martin ’07 has built a career rooted in storytelling.

The Department of Music remembers the life and musical legacy of Dr. John Rack, who recently passed away, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Dr. Rack retired in 2021 as an Associate Professor of Music at UNCW, where he coordinated the music education program and taught percussion, world music, and percussion methods. A gifted musician and educator, he also served for many years as principal timpanist for the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. His love of music extended far beyond the classroom and stage, including teaching at summer camps, directing community bands, and traveling to Ghana, where he spent time immersed in African musical culture.

Faculty colleagues and alumni remember Dr. Rack as a kind-hearted, witty, and dedicated educator. Humble to a fault, his contributions to our department extended far beyond any job description (he even built the percussion storage himself, simply because it needed to be done!) His legacy endures not only in the music he made, but in the many students and colleagues whose lives he inspired.

Join us in welcoming our newly appointed Assistant Professor of Piano, Dr. Hyeseon Jin. A multifaceted pianist, she earned her DM, MM, and PD from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, and her BM from Seoul National University in South Korea.

As an active soloist and collaborative artist, Dr. Jin has performed at major venues including the Kennedy Center and Seoul Arts Center. She has appeared as a fellow at the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain and an artist-in-residence at Porto Pianofest in Portugal. Most recently, she won the First Prize and the Alan Walker Budapest Prize at the Franz Liszt International Piano Festival and Competition, leading to an upcoming solo recital at the prestigious Liszt Academy in Hungary.

Committed to music education and arts administration, she is the Founder and Director of the IU Blossom Piano Camp and serves as Chair for major competitions, including the NSAL Instrumental Competition and IMTA Hoosier Auditions. Her previous faculty appointments include DePauw University, Anderson University, and the IU Young Pianists Program.
