💚 What an AMAZING week at JC Roe Academy! 💚
This week, our entire school community came together to celebrate Start With Hello Week… a week focused on building connections, reducing social isolation, helping students recognize when someone may need support, and empowering them to be upstanders who speak up, reach out, and help others feel seen and included.
And at JC Roe, we had a BLAST doing it! 💚
Throughout the week, students participated in lessons and activities centered around Start With Hello and See Something, Say Something, while affirmation cards were available for students to take and share a little encouragement with someone who might need it.
On Tuesday, we combined community building with a little STEM and had SO much fun tie-dyeing shirts GREEN with our students in preparation for Wear Green Wednesday! The next day, students and staff filled the school with green as one school community showing our support for connection, kindness, inclusion, and looking out for one another. 💚
One of our favorite activities lasted all week! Every student and staff member wrote three things about themselves that were written on a paper hand, and all of the hands were displayed together on a bulletin board. Then the challenge began: How well do we really know our JC Roe family? Students and staff tried to match each hand with the person it described!
Today, we wrapped it all up with a Fun Friday celebration, revealed our contest winners, enjoyed popsicle treats, and recognized the top three students and staff members with certificates and some fun prizes. There was plenty of laughter- and maybe a little friendly competition! 😄
Most importantly, our students spent the week learning that something as simple as saying “hello,” noticing someone who may feel left out, choosing to be an upstander, or speaking up when something doesn’t seem right can make a difference.
None of this would have happened without two very special people: our counselor, Mr. Johnny Manning, and one of our social workers, Ms. Angie Baker. 💚 These two worked tirelessly behind the scenes- creating incredible bulletin boards, planning contests and activities, preparing daily announcements, providing lessons, working directly with students and staff, organizing our celebration, and finding creative ways to make the messages of the week meaningful AND fun.
We cannot thank them enough for giving our students a week that built skills, relationships, belonging, and community while creating some pretty great memories along the way.
At JC Roe, we know relationships matter- and this week was a wonderful reminder that sometimes making a difference really can Start With Hello. 💚⚓
