We are excited to welcome three new institutions to the Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC)! 🎉 These departments advance through curriculum integration, safer laboratory practices, research, and student learning.

🧪 The University of Kansas is expanding green chemistry and toxicology in Organic Chemistry while building on its longstanding work in sustainable chemistry and engineering through the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis.

🧪 Université Marien NGOUABI in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, integrates green chemistry throughout undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, laboratory practice, and research. It plans to expand sustainable chemistry programming and collaboration.

🧪 University of Uyo in Nigeria has already introduced Green Chemistry and Toxicology courses and is working to strengthen greener laboratory practices, faculty development, student research, and outreach.

A recent paper in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s RSC Sustainability maps the state of green chemistry education, research, and policy across seven Latin American countries. 🌎

The paper brings together over 20 coauthors, mostly from Beyond Benign’s Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) network, synthesizing green chemistry work in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico.

We spoke with three authors—Dr. Juliana Vidal (Beyond Benign), Dr. Flavia Zacconi (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile), and Dr. Humberto Milagre (UNESP - Universidade Estadual Paulista)—about what it took to unite so many voices and what the process revealed about the region.

The ninth principle of , “Catalysis,” states that catalytic reagents, as selective as possible, are superior to stoichiometric reagents. 🧪

This principle asks chemists to consider how a reaction is driven. Stoichiometric reagents are used up during a reaction, often generating more waste and needing larger amounts of material.

Catalytic reagents can be used in small amounts and repeat a process many times without being consumed. Principle nine encourages chemists to design reactions that are more selective, efficient, and produce less waste.

For students, this reinforces an important idea: greener chemistry can come from making reactions work smarter, not just adding more material.
