🌎 A potentially powerful El Niño is taking shape, and scientists are watching closely.

NOAA forecasts now show a very high chance that El Niño will develop and persist through late 2026 into early 2027. Some projections suggest there is a significant possibility it could become a strong event, drawing comparisons to some of the largest El Niño episodes in recorded history.

The last major "super El Niño" events reshaped weather patterns worldwide, bringing droughts, floods, heat waves, crop losses, and billions of dollars in economic damage.

Researchers are paying close attention because this time Earth is already starting from a much hotter climate baseline than in the past. That raises concerns that weather extremes could become more intense in some regions.

Still, scientists stress an important point: forecasts are not certainties. The strength and global impacts of the 2026-27 event are still developing and remain under close monitoring.

A natural climate cycle on an already warming planet could become one of the biggest weather stories of the decade.
