Do you ever have a student that needs constant reassurance (verbal or otherwise) that they are doing a good job ? If so this may work for you. My student would say โruff dayโ every time he was asked to work independently- an important skill. Now he earns happy faces when he works independently and he feels good about himself. The tokens donโt get traded in for anything, but are a visual reminder that he is doing the right thing and not being rejected.

The first few weeks of school we do a basic science experiment planting seeds in paper towels to see if they grow. The goal is to make a hypothesis and prove it right or wrong.
The best part of this experiment is watching the kids shock as they their plants get bigger and bigger!

Do you have a calm area in your classroom? Is it where kids go when they need a break or when you need them to take a break?
In my calm area I like to use visuals to help make the self-regulation process more independent. Visuals are important because they:
๐ฃ Increase Communication: Visuals help children understand whatโs expected and express themselves when words are tough.
๐ Lessen Anxiety: Clear, consistent visuals reduce uncertainty, making the calm area feel safe and predictable.
๐ง Easier Understanding: Breaking down complex ideas into simple steps with visuals helps kids grasp what they need to do.
๐คฒ Promotes Independence: Visuals guide children to use the calm area on their own, empowering them to self-regulate.
๐ Consistent Cues: Visuals provide reliable, non-verbal reminders of routines and calming strategies.
๐ Sensory Support: Visual cues can also remind kids of sensory tools that help them relax, like deep breathing or using a stress ball.
Letโs create environments that truly support our kidsโ needs! ๐
If you need support in setting up your calm area with visuals you can use the link below. It includes a wall visual, a book on how to use each tool and a reflection sheet for students to use once their break is over.

Lots of schools/admin teams/principals are strong "advocates" of focus walls. Some schools even require them. I used to hate them but in the past few years I have come to appreciate them for several reasons.
1. Focus walls help remind students of the key concepts for the week. Posting visual supports for students with Autism and other disabilities helps support their understanding.
2. Focus walls provides a consistent structure in our classrooms. It helps students, especially those with learning difficulties, feel secure and know what to expect each day.
3. Focus walls are visually stimulating and constantly updated with new information. In my classroom, the goal is to increase language and social interactions. Focus walls help to do that.
4. Focus walls keep ME on track. They are a roadmap for the weekโs lessons, ensuring that I cover all necessary content without getting sidetracked.
If you want to try a focus wall, here is a link to the PDF I made to use this year.

When working with children with autism, visual schedules and reward charts can be game-changers! ๐จโจ Here's why:
๐น Clear Expectations: Visual schedules help kids understand their day, reducing anxiety and increasing independence.
๐น Routine: Consistent visual cues make transitions smoother and build a sense of security.
๐น Positive Reinforcement: Reward charts motivate and celebrate achievements, encouraging positive behavior.
