Sara Carroll and Sarah Walters describe themselves as “kind of a lot.” Spend some time with the two professors, and you quickly learn that means they care a lot, too.
With neighboring offices in Goddard Hall, Carroll and Walters lead Eastern’s public health concentration as a team. They finish each other’s thoughts, bring very different perspectives to their teaching and share a commitment to helping students discover where public health can take them.
“She’s the art, I’m the science,” Walters said.
Carroll approaches public health through storytelling, people and the social sciences, while Walters brings a quantitative perspective and nearly two decades of experience working in public health. Together, those differences give Eastern students a broader view of a field that can lead to “a thousand different things.”
Their partnership extends beyond teaching. They co-mentor students, create experiential learning opportunities, support students through challenges and are working to build new pathways for the future of public health at Eastern.
“I feel like I’m the professor that I would have always wanted, but never had,” Carroll said.
