Congratulations Grace!!

Congratulations to SUNY Erie sophomore pitcher Grace Szpylman on being named the 2026 NJCAA SUNY Spring Scholar Athlete of the Year for Softball!

Grace's dedication in the classroom and on the field made her the top softball scholar-athlete among SUNY Community Colleges. An Early Childhood Education major with a 3.80 GPA, she helped lead the Kats to a Region III Championship and a 6th-place finish at the NJCAA Division III National Championship.

She also dominated in the circle, leading Region III with a 2.37 ERA while recording 167 strikeouts, earning First Team All-Region III honors along the way.

Grace becomes the third SUNY Erie student-athlete to earn SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year honors during the 2025-26 academic year, showcasing the excellence of our Kats both in competition and in the classroom.

Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

This past weekend, SUNY Erie was proud to participate in the 50th Annual Buffalo Juneteenth Celebration. President Dr. Adiam Tsegai proudly marched alongside Governor Kathy Hochul as our college joined the community in recognizing this important milestone and celebrating Buffalo's rich history and culture.

In observance of Juneteenth, all SUNY Erie campus locations will be closed today. We encourage our community to take time to reflect on the significance of this day and its enduring impact on our nation's history.

A new field. New opportunities. Future champions in the making.

Today, SUNY Erie proudly celebrated the ribbon cutting of our new state-of-the-art multisport turf facility, the new home of Erie Kats football, men's soccer, women's soccer, and softball.

This remarkable investment in our student-athletes reflects SUNY Erie's commitment to excellence, opportunity, and success both on and off the field. After celebrating three Regional Championship teams this past year, we are excited about what the future holds and the opportunities this facility will create for even more Erie Kats success.

Thank you to SUNY Erie President Dr. Adiam Tsegai, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, SUNY Trustee Eunice Lewin, our distinguished guests, faculty, staff, student-athletes, alumni, and community supporters who joined us for this exciting milestone.

The games, championships, memories, and traditions created here are still to come. We cannot wait to see future generations of Erie Kats compete, achieve, and make their mark on this field.

Flashback Friday: 2020 to 2026

The 2020s reflect a period of resilience, innovation, and continued growth for SUNY Erie. In 2020, William D. Reuter returned as acting president, and the Associate of Arts in English program was approved, expanding academic offerings.

Leadership transitioned in 2022 with the appointment of Dr. David K. Balkin as the college’s thirteenth president. That same year, the SUNY Erie Kats football team played its final game of the season at Highmark Stadium.

In September 2024, Dr. Adiam Tsegai was named the college’s fourteenth president, becoming the first African American and first woman to lead the institution.

In 2025, SUNY Erie continued to expand workforce development and community partnerships, including the Automotive Technology program’s expansion to the Northland Workforce Training Center, participation in the SUNY Reconnect program providing tuition-free access for eligible adult learners, and a $1 million gift from West Herr Automotive Group to modernize automotive training. The college also unveiled a new South Campus in Orchard Park and welcomed Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz for the State of the County Address.

Looking ahead, the development of the North Athletics Complex in 2026 reflects the college’s continued commitment to growth and student success.
