Two identical oxygen-consumption values may not represent identical metabolic work.
Measurement is only as useful as its interpretation.
VO2 is foundational in exercise physiology because it measures oxygen consumption. But oxygen use occurs within a larger metabolic context.
If two people produce the same VO2 while relying on different substrate mixtures, should we automatically assume the physiological cost and adaptation are identical? That question led to our work on substrate-corrected VO2.
The objective is not to replace conventional calorimetry. It is to examine whether substrate-informed interpretation can improve how we evaluate economy, recovery, metabolic shifts, and response to intervention.
