Teaching through Emotions

Teaching through Emotions I offer Social Emotional Learning to teachers through individual and group work that helps them make sense of their emotions and relationships in school.

The work helps teachers:

• respond effectively when students and others push their buttons
• establish and maintain boundaries that facilitate learning
• manage power struggles so everyone “wins”
• notice when and how students are using them for developmental purposes
• channel their emotions into effective and rewarding action

Above all, my work aims at offering relief to teachers as they under

take the difficult, highly emotional, often stressful task of helping all their students learn and grow. I have written an SEL primer for teachers called The Feeling of Teaching: Using Emotions and Relationships to Transform the Classroom. It is a stand-alone manual that explains in clear detail how to acknowledge emotions, what questions to ask of them, and how to make effective plans for action based on them.

Here's a new bonus episode of Teaching through Emotions! It's about a project founded by my producer, Jullian Androkae, who built a library in a village in south Madagascar. In the episode, Jullian and I talk about the relational issues we all have in common, here in the US and there in Madagascar, as well as the significant differences between our two educational systems. It will make you happy and hopeful! Please give it a listen -- and consider donating to this magnificent project!

It's summertime! And TTE is still going strong! Just posted an episode from the Truth for Teachers podcast on restorative practices in schools. The big question is why so many schools drop the practice? The guest, Marisol Quevedo Rerucha, shares a lot of wisdom that inspires!

Are you leaving teaching or thinking of leaving at the end of this year? We're sorry to lose you! But check out this Public Service Announcement from TTE before you blame the system or blame yourself or blame anybody or anything else. Your unhappiness is not a blame game. It's a question of relational patterns and fits and other things you actually have control over.

A Public Service Announcement in which I ponder the way human beings work
