Read Jim's opening column, Michigan Turtles Face-to-Face. The world we've created for human convenience happens to be terrible for turtle survival. Anyone any age can help them by acknowledging the ten species native to Michigan: learning to identify them, then becoming familiar with their individual ranges, habit and ecological needs, and vulnerabilities to human-caused dangers.
We're housing all ten Michigan species at our 'big little' nature center north of Williamston and use them extensively in educational programs. Pay a visit by appointment nearly any day to meet them in person, then help feed them. We recently had 'Turtle Portrait Day' here to get you started...

Last week, before the extreme cold-snap snapped we had over 100 birds at a time coming in to our feeding station. The secret is the extra seed mix scattered on the ground that brings droves of native American Tree Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos, all Canadian migrants, in to feed. At first light I scattered a cupful of mix across the top of our brick-lined tortoise pen. The second I step inside they tumble down from the trees. Within a minute you can count over 60 descend.
