In 1953, a newly formed high school combined both the secondary schools of Williamston and Pelzer communities. Palmetto Middle School was established in 1972 when the high school relocated to new facilities across Hamilton Street. Over the years, the former high school campus, now Palmetto Middle School has been a focal point in the community. The school continues to be used by numerous organizati

ons for community functions such as athletic events, pageants and as a polling place during elections. Extensive renovation of the main building took place in 1997. Through the 2000-01 school year, the school included grades five through eight. In the fall of 2001, all fifth grades were moved to elementary schools, and the school has served grades six through eight since that time. Consistent with the middle school concept, the division of students into smaller learning communities is practiced. Students receive four core classes, which include English language arts, math, science and social studies, as well as two related arts classes. Classes are divided into a block schedule so that students receive 60+ minutes of instruction in each academic class. Palmetto Middle School also utilizes a flexible schedule in which academic classes are rotated on the first day of each month. Brain-based research and experience have shown that some students function much better at one time of the day than another. This schedule prevents students from having the same academic class during the same time period for the entire school year. The school has 48 classroom teachers, three guidance counselors who also serve as career development facilitators, one media specialist and three administrators. Each faculty member employed at our school is certified and in compliance with the South Carolina Department of Education requirements.
