As some of you know, we’ve lost a mighty spirit: David Clewell. It was always my honor to publish his excellent work, and our email exchanges over the years were among the most spirited I’ve had with anyone.
Quite unexpectedly, I received the following email over the weekend from one of his colleagues at Webster University, Murray Farish. I’m sharing it (with permission) because I was moved that he would reach out in this way, and because it offers a glimpse of David’s ebullient personality:
I'm sorry to report to you that my friend and colleague, David Clewell, died Friday night, at home, apparently in his sleep. The university is putting out an announcement later today, and word's gotten out on social media, but I've been trying to reach out to people he was close with.
He loved Brilliant Corners and his association with the magazine, and, of course, his friendship with you. As you're doubtless aware, David was a mighty proselytizer for the things he dug, and every time a new BC would land he'd pass it along. "But remember," he'd say, "I want that one back."
