May's Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month is right around the corner!

Every May, we come together to highlight the importance of bone health and the steps we can take to protect it. This year's theme, Building Better Bones Together, reflects the role that connection plays in how we nourish our bodies, stay active, and support one another along the way.

Bone health is a lifelong journey, and it's not one we have to take alone.

Join us throughout the month as we share resources, start new conversations, and encourage simple ways to stay strong together.

In the never have I ever category: a good night’s sleep has become like a top tier goal. I faithfully get morning sun, adequate movement, my nutrition is tight, my sleep hygiene practices are on point and most nights are great-this one though 💯😍

We made it-if you’re reading this, we’ve survived 2025 and have officially entered 2026! Congratulations 🥳
Every year around this time I do a personal inventory of how I managed-my insights for 2025 are these:

I didn’t use a mood or mind altering substance! And there was every valid reason in the world to do so. If you’re in recovery and didn’t use this year-give yourself a giant hug! Because what a colossal s**tshow 2025 was! If you did use-forgive yourself and start again-now.

That said-after 11 years completely free of all psychiatric medication, I did request antianxiety medication this year because what a colossal s**tshow. 💩

I survived yet another major surgery (the fourth and hopefully last since 2024) my shoulder surgery went well, my knees, almost 2 now, seem to have settled in. 🤗

I completed my menopause coaching certification and nutrition training and my head is full-as we head into year 2 of MAHA mentality, I’m committed to providing actual evidence based education that isn’t sexy or alarming-but works. 💪🏽

I’m feeling more comfortable within myself these days. I’m working toward higher and more consistent self regulation. This looks like not touching my phone for 30 minutes of waking up, instead doing a quiet meditation and self checkin.

Self abandonment has been an ongoing struggle for me-I found this last year I was able to embody small, sustainable habits that kept me from abandoning myself. If I slipped, I was able to come home to myself quickly and without internal drama. Those are huge wins for a person like me. I’m done putting pressure on myself to measure up to some idealized standard. I want to be my best self-but calm and steady. I think I’ve finally internalized slow and steady wins the race! 💜

I tend to focus on protein and fiber in my meals-and generally (within reason) let the rest fall where it may, these days.

This beauty has 40 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber. I eat a salad like this most days. It’s also delicious.

I focus on a wide variety of colors in my foods, as each color group provides different phytonutrients. I always include artichoke hearts because they’re delicious and they are packed with prebiotic fiber.

Need help meal planning? I’m your girl!

💡As menopause awareness month comes to a close, here’s a list of the most common symptoms. Some of these you may be surprised by because they seem to be beyond the normal thought on what menopause is, for instance my personal favorites (right now 😳) are: tinnitus, heart palpitations, and anxiety.

💡The thing you didn’t learn in biology class or in that special 5th grade assembly for girls only: we have estrogen receptors throughout our bodies; they’re everywhere. So my tinnitus-estrogen deficiency. Same with my anxiety. I didn’t need antianxiety meds-I needed estrogen !

💡I have resources available for those who want to have convos with their doctor, to help begin sorting through all the things. Let me know how I can help.

How are you sleeping and why does good quality sleep matter so damn much?

I’ve been actively working on my sleep quality for years. I have a set bedtime, protocols in place an hour ahead of that. Another protocol at wake up that includes morning sun. I control the things within the realm of controllable-when I go to bed, when I get up, the amount of caffeine I have daily, my food choices. All of this helps (your body loves routine and consistency!).

There’s always going to be stuff outside your control-anxiety, pressing life matters, night sweats, the government being governmenty in the worst ways-but with an earnest desire you can improve your sleep quality-which will improve your mood and make self regulation less necessary; it can improve your self control and food choices; a good night’s sleep makes it way easier to get to the gym and makes the work you do there feel more enjoyable. A solid night’s sleep sets us up to be lovely humans 💜

I slept like the dead my entire life until perimenopause in my early 50’s. After a couple years of s**t sleep, I put my protocols into place. Even after a decade of this there are still tweaks I’ve had to make, minor adjustments. Most recently I added testosterone to my routine and my sleep dropped by about 30 minutes a night-but the quality (measured by me in awake minutes) increased. I assume my body will adjust, especially now that the sun is rising later.

This right here ⬇️ awesome!!! 💜

Why focus so much on bone health? They are the living foundation upon which all else lives. Keep the bones strong and there’s hope for all the other stuff.

Things I didn’t know when I was young-alcohol is terrible for bone health (and brain health!). I drank a lot anyway. Grownups warned kids (while they smoked!) that smoking would stunt their growth. What they didn’t say was it wasn’t going to happen until we were old 😂

I smoked from the age of 11 or 12 until I was well into my 50’s. I drank hard until just days before my 28th birthday. My first DEXA scan showed I’d shrunk an inch. Five years later I’d lost another 1/4 inch. The technician asked the first time if I smoked. I quit 3 years ago-can I have my inch back? 🤣

Many of the symptoms of menopause eventually fase away, either with treatment or time. Bone loss doesn’t fade away and it’s invisible, so we won’t know it’s happening. Bone loss is reversible with intention and commitment.

I’ll be offering a free introductory yoga for bone health class later this month. Stay tuned 🧘‍♀️🩻🦴

My first DEXA scan in 2020 revealed a -1.4 SD, which was glossed over by my doctors. My scan this August showed -1.7 SD, still osteopenic, but a slow progression. Osteopenia is reversible with intention and effort.

Nutrition and movement are key. Adequate daily protein (if you’re not already focused on protein-it will seem like a lot!! I say this from experience -it took me well over a year to consistently keep my protein at my goal). I supplement with some calcium, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2. I lift 3x a week, walk barefoot on concrete flooring several (3–5) miles a day and do daily heel drops. I’ve added the heel drops gradually as they can be jarring.

If you haven’t yet, ask your doctor to schedule a DEXA scan to get your baseline numbers.

I’m pretty passionate about shouting about estrogen from the rooftops & to anyone who will listen. Why? Because women have estrogen receptors in every single part of their bodies. What’s affected by the loss of estrogen? Hearing-tinnitus anyone? Digestion, hair loss, sexual health, eye sight, libido, muscle mass, bone density, involuntary body recomposition …there is almost no function in a woman’s body that isn’t impacted by the loss of estrogen.

There are women who either choose or by family medical history are recommended not to take certain forms of certain hormones. This just means we have to be more intentional about tending to our health-particularly bone and muscle mass. The time for you is now-do not postpone this vital self-care. Don’t know where to start? Ask me 😊
