Last week, Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor toured Penn College at Pittsburgh and had the opportunity to observe an HEP Installer class in action.

Seeing our students engaged in hands-on training offered a firsthand look at how workforce education is helping develop skilled professionals, support local industry, and strengthen communities across the Pittsburgh region.

Thank you for visiting, Mayor O'Connor!

A major milestone for workforce readiness in Pennsylvania!

Penn College at Pittsburgh has officially opened a new hands-on training facility, made possible through funding administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). This investment is helping expand access to practical, career-focused education where it’s needed most.

What sets this site apart is its partnership with Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation, which strengthens connections across the region and opens doors for more individuals to access training and career pathways.

At the opening, guests experienced live demonstrations, from air sealing and insulation labs to advanced diagnostic tools, showcasing how learners will gain real-world skills in building performance and energy efficiency.

This facility represents more than a new space, it’s a commitment to people, careers, and stronger communities.

Welcome to our new Next Door instructors! Last month, we hosted a 2-day onboarding session for new Next Door instructors at our training lab in Harrisburg. Seven Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors participated from five schools:

- Matthew Beitman & Andrew Groff, Dauphin County Tech School
- Trevor Fronk & Nicholas Sabold, York County School of Technology
- Evan Helsley, Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology
- Mitch Hinton, Lebanon County Career & Technology Center
- Zak Marinkov, Milton Hershey School

Next Door is a grant funded program supported by the PA Department of Community & Economic Development. The goal of the program is to build a skilled talent pipeline for PA's Weatherization industry by partnering with CTE high schools across the state.

Excited to share the successful completion of our latest Introductory Solar PV Training with participants from Pennsylvania’s Weatherization Assistance Program network.

This 16-hour hybrid course combines virtual learning and hands-on instruction to build a strong foundational understanding of solar PV systems, helping participants better connect solar, building performance, and electrification efforts. While not an installation certification, this training plays a critical role in strengthening awareness and advancing clean energy integration across the weatherization workforce.

Program highlights:
- 16-hour hybrid format (online + in-person, hands-on)
- Focus on solar PV fundamentals and its role in building performance
- Supported through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA)

A sincere thank you to Rick Naranjo of Paradise Energy Solutions for delivering an engaging and impactful training experience.

We also appreciate the participation and collaboration of:
- Action Housing Inc.
- Community Action Inc.
- Tableland Services Inc.
- PA Department of Community and Economic Development

Looking forward to continuing this momentum as we expand clean energy knowledge across the network.

“Working in weatherization not only allows you to help communities in need with your own two hands, but also pushes your skills to improve every day with a purpose. It is humbling to get the opportunity to help so many people who truly need it. It is a profession that makes you proud of the impact you make on others' lives for the better, and shows that what you do with your day is worth so much more than just a paycheck.” – Henry, QCI Student

Henry reminds us that weatherization is not only a hands-on way to serve communities, but it’s a path of personal growth and purpose.

“I absolutely love the work we do and the customers we do the work for… I was sold on this business the day I saw an elderly woman cry tears of joy because she couldn’t believe people were willing to help her.” - Chuck, HEP Crew Leader Student

This story from one of our HEP Crew Leader students reminds us that weatherization is more than just energy efficiency; it’s about compassion, connection, and community.
