Whitley County and Somerset battled to one of the longest boys' basketball regular season games in KHSAA history on February 11, 1977 before the Colonels emerged as 82-79 victors in five overtimes. Homestanding Whitley trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter before a 1-3-1 trapping defense spurred a rally. The teams were tied at 60 apiece at the end of regulation and knotted at 64-64, 68-68, and 72-72 after the first three extra periods when the teams took a longer than usual three-minute break. Both squads scored 3 each in the fourth overtime before the Colonels pulled away in the fifth and final bonus stanza. Donnie Hamlin and Lester Phillips paced WCHS with 22 points each. Hamlin's two free throws with four seconds left in the fifth overtime clinched the win for the Colonels. Greg Gover tossed in a game-high 30 points for Somerset's Briar Jumpers. 6'9" future Maryland Terrapin Mark Fothergill chipped in 19 for Somerset.
