ENGR 290 2015: Italy

ENGR 290 2015: Italy Bucknell Engineering's three-week long summer course went to the Bel Paese in 2015. This was the first ENGR290 program that included foreign language content.

The exciting places in our itinerary included Rome, Florence, Venice, and Modena. This course is being organized by a team of three professors: Felipe Perrone (Computer Science), Thomas DiStefano (Civil Engineering), and Lisa Perrone (Italian Studies).

Prof. Maurizio Seracini, who gave an outstanding lecture to our program while we were in Florence, can be seen in this TED talk. Prof. Seracini is a champion of the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to engineering, science, and the liberal arts, which resonates with the nature of the Bucknell engineering education.

Art history is far from set in stone. Engineer Maurizio Seracini spent 30 years searching for Leonardo da Vinci’s lost fresco “The Battle of Anghiari,” and in the process discovered that many paintings have layers of history hidden underneath. Should they be part of the viewing experience too?

The Daily Item (the local newspaper for Lewisburg) had an article yesterday about test driving Ferraris while in Maranello and what a ruckus it's causing for the residents. We wouldn't know anything about that, now, would we? http://www.dailyitem.com/ferrari-hometown-overwhelmed-by-roar-of-test-driving-fans/image_fa3955f2-065e-5cbd-a9e9-00b144571eba.html

In this photo taken on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, Ferrari cars are parked at the Push-Start test-drive service, in Maranello, Italy. Just outside the gates of the Ferrari Museum in the carmaker’s birthplace of Maranello, entrepreneurial spirit is clashing with communal concerns for safety and even decoru…

A fun moment from the last week of the trip was our primer in everyday Italian hand-gestures. Didn't catch them all? Mental floss has a review for you!
(those of a sensitive disposition may wish to stop watching before the end).

Italians have a large collection of gestures they use while speaking (or in many cases instead of speaking). The gestures convey subtle differences in meaning which can be hard to pick up on. There are plenty of videos out there that will teach you a few of them, but why not learn them from Dolce&Ga…
