Our mobile learning Fridays are off to an amazing start! So far, we have been to a learning session about pollinators, hosted by the James City County Parks and Recreation department, have visited the Williamsburg Regional Library, and have toured the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg! The kiddos are loving our new van, and we can transport them to so many amazing learning opportunities in our area! We have an incredible lineup for the rest of August, as well as September and October, which includes hands-on archaeology experiences, a learning session with the Williamsburg Boat Club, a visit to the police station, and a tour of the Norfolk Zoo!

Our "Choose Your Own Adventure" camp includes a SLEW of activities - we weren't sure which would be the most popular and were excited to see what the kiddos chose each day. Our menu includes STEAM activities (VEX Go robotics/coding, science labs, green screen movie making, Lego Spike Essentials robotics/coding, stop motion animation, wand making, painting, and origami, to name a few!), games like Dragonwood, Ping Pong, Junior Detective, and Math War, and outdoor activities like basketball, soccer, kickball, line dancing, and bean bag toss. It has been so interesting to see how some activities are favorites across all weeks (Dragonwood was a clear winner!), while others vary depending on the particular mix of kiddos that we have.

We have seen some amazing creations: robotic arms, hilarious videos, fantastic animations, and whimsical stories. We've watched our young campers have the chance to coach each other, brainstorm together, negotiate roles, and inspire each other to fantastic feats of creativity!

This summer, we did something very unusual for summer camps: we let the kiddos choose their own adventure. Each morning, they are presented with a menu of choices, and they discuss amongst themselves and decide what they want to do that day. When they complete that station/activity, they choose another one! The menu includes STEAM activities like paper airplane engineering, robotics/coding, green screen movie making, stop motion animation, wand making, sculpting and baking clay charms, and painting; sports activities like kickball or soccer; and indoor games like Dragonwood or ping pong.

This is a departure from our prior year camps, where we had a different theme each week, with activities centered around that theme. We weren't totally sure how all of this choice would work out, but we have found that, when given autonomy, children work together and create the most amazing things!

This week, we had one young learner recreate the interior of a vehicle, while a team of three campers worked together to research and create a film on narwhals. The Dragonwood game has been a huge hit, and every day this week has seen paper airplane competitions and campers teaching their peers how to recreate successful designs. We are having so much fun watching them learn, create, and collaborate!

Summer camp fun begins! Campers' favorites so far have been the Lego Spike Essentials coding, filming movies using a greenscreen, creating wands and re-enacting Harry Potter-style wizard duels, building a hydraulic paper airplane launcher, and spontaneous math and creative writing challenges. We can't wait to see what these creative and curious kiddos get up to over the next several weeks!

As the weather becomes gorgeous, our young learners have really enjoyed our time outside. We take three recesses each day, to allow ample time for healthy fun, play-based learning, and imaginative play - from inventing the game of “Baby Ball” to creating restaurants serving mud pies and other nature-based treats, the children always surprise us with their creativity and joy.

One of the greatest things about Da Vinci is watching the kiddos find their tribe. I had such a blast transporting this delightful little trio to Dry Rocks this weekend. They chatted happily about A Series of Unfortunate Events and Harry Potter in the drive to Richmond, and spent the entire drive back asking for riddles and brain teasers.
