William & Mary Physics Department

William & Mary Physics Department The Physics Department at William & Mary combines a thriving research environment with excellence in graduate and undergraduate education. degree.

The department consists of thirty members on the instructional faculty, together with approximately fifteen additional physicists in purely research positions. Our undergraduate program offers a major and minor. Through our graduate program, students pursue a Ph.D. We have an active summer REU program. Research areas in the department include atomic, molecular, and optical physics, computational p

hysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and hadronic physics, high energy physics, and plasma and non-linear physics. Related research areas include accelerator physics (in cooperation with Jefferson Lab) and material characterization (in cooperation with NASA-Langley Research Center). The department also has strong links with the interdisciplinary Applied Science Department and Computational Science Cluster.

CDSP Undergrad Open House.

The Physic Department represented!

SPS (Society of Physics Students), MCP (Mentoring Careers in Physics) and the Astronomy Club were out in force today sharing the fun and great things that go on in our Physics Clubs.

Even our Department Chair (Josh Erlich) and the Undergrad Committee Chair (Irina Novikova) got into the action talking to new undergrads about majoring in Physics.

W&M Racing competed against large engineering schools such as: Johns Hopkins, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State, and very own sailed away from the competition.

The race was part of a national collegiate competition sponsored by the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Office of Naval Research.

Congratulations to our W&M Racing Team.

William & Mary Racing won the 2026 Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP) autonomous division

Congratulations to Dr. Ran Yang and the undergraduate students in her point-of-care lab!

Blending physics with applied science, the Engineering Physics and Applied Design (EPAD) program prepares students to tackle real-world challenges with innovative, hands-on solutions.

W&M's CDSP EPAD students built iRays, a pre-hospital neuro-triage device developed in partnership with Hampton Fire & Rescue.
